I looked at the photo on his screen for a long time.It was not a long lens shot. Not the kind paparazzi take from across the street with equipment that makes everything look slightly soft at the edges. This was close. Clear. Taken from maybe ten feet away by someone standing on the pavement who knew exactly where to be and exactly when to be there.I said: they were right next to the cab.He said: yes.I said: I didn't see anyone. He said: you weren't looking. He was right. I had been looking at the seventh floor. I had been doing the thing I told myself not to do and while I was doing it someone was standing ten feet away with their phone pointed at me.I put my bag down. I took off my coat. I sat at the island. He put his phone on the counter face up between us. I looked at the photo again. Something was bothering me about it and I was trying to find what it was. I looked at the background. Derek's building on the right. The pavement. The cab. My face in the window. And on the left

The elevator opened and he was already in the kitchen.Jacket off. Coffee on the counter. And the look on his face that I was starting to recognise, the one that meant he already knew something and was waiting for me to catch up.I said: I went to meet someone today. He said: I know.I stopped. He said: Felix.I said: Felix followed me.He said: Felix has been following you since the photo last night. He said it the way he said everything. Just a fact. No apology wrapped around it, no performance of one either.I should have been annoyed.I was a little annoyed.I was also thinking about the unknown number and the private investigators and the car outside Derek's building and honestly Felix following me quietly was the least frightening thing on that list so I let it go.I put my bag down. I sat at the island.I said: her name is Helena Marsh. He said: I know that too.I looked at him.He said: Felix identified her when she walked into the coffee shop. He said: I've been on the phone

I didn't tell Caden about the envelope. Not because I was hiding it. Because I needed to think about it somewhere quiet first and the penthouse was not quiet when Caden was in it with his phone and his jaw doing that tight thing and his lawyer already on a call by the time I had put the photograph back on the counter.I told him I was going to see Walter in the morning. He said: I'll come.I said: not today. Give me this one alone. He looked at me for a moment. He said: okay.Just okay. He didn't push. I was starting to understand that about him. He knew which things to push on and which ones to leave and this was one he left.I took the envelope.---Walter was having a good morning. He was sitting up when I came in, colour in his face, the good tea on the table beside him which meant the nurse he liked had been on shift. He looked at me the way he always looked at me when I came through that door, like the room had just got something it was missing. He said: there she is.I sat down
