The limousine pulled through a massive wrought-iron gate and stopped in front of a sprawling stone mansion. Through the rain-streaked window, Flora saw armed guards stationed at the entrance, holding assault rifles."Get out," Arthur commanded, opening his door."Where are we?" Flora asked, her voice shaking slightly as she looked at the towering structure."My estate. Your new home," Arthur replied. "Get out of the car.""I am not going in there. I want to go back to the city.""You have nothing in the city. Your father threw you out, and your fiancé betrayed you. Get out, Flora.""I can go to a hotel. I have money in my bank account.""Your bank accounts are frozen," Arthur said flatly. "I had my people lock them down thirty minutes ago. You have zero dollars to your name. Now, step out of the car before I drag you out."Flora glared at him, her chest heaving. She knew he wasn't bluffing. Reluctantly, she slid across the leather seat and stepped out into the cold night. A guard imme

Flora woke up with a sharp gasp, her chest heaving as her eyes darted around the unfamiliar room. The digital clock on the mahogany nightstand read 8:00 AM. She was completely alone in the massive king-size bed. She quickly slipped her hand under the dark silk pillow. The cold, metal handle of the silver fruit knife was still there. She let out a shaky breath, leaving it hidden, and pushed the heavy blankets off her legs. She ran to the main double doors and grabbed the brass handles. She pulled with all her strength. Locked."Open the door!" Flora yelled, slamming her palms against the thick oak wood. "Hey! Is anyone out there? Open this door!"Total silence. She backed away, breathing heavily, and turned her attention to the floor-to-ceiling windows. She unlatched the heavy glass door and stepped out onto the wide stone balcony. The cold morning air hit her face. She looked down, hoping to find a drainpipe or a trellis.Instead, she saw three massive Rottweilers patrolling the manic

"Pour me another one."Devon sat on the edge of the leather sofa in his apartment, staring blankly at the glass coffee table. The left side of his jaw was completely swollen, bruised a deep, ugly purple from where Arthur’s man had struck him with the pistol. He held a glass of whiskey in his right hand, his knuckles white from gripping it so tightly.Vanessa stood by the kitchen island, holding a bottle of scotch. She poured a generous amount into his glass, masking the triumphant smirk on her face with a look of deep concern."You need to slow down, Devon," Vanessa said, her voice soft and sympathetic. "Drinking yourself to death isn't going to change what happened today.""I let him take her," Devon muttered, his voice slurred and thick with self-hatred. "He walked right in, held a gun to my father's head, and carried Flora out like she was a piece of property. And I just lay there bleeding on the floor.""There was nothing you could do," Vanessa said, sitting next to him on the sof

The heavy oak doors unlocked with a sharp click. Flora did not turn away from the floor-to-ceiling windows. She kept her eyes on the rain still drizzling over the high stone walls of the Sterling estate."I brought you fresh tea, ma'am," a soft voice said.Flora finally turned. It wasn't Arthur. It was an older woman in a crisp black and white maid's uniform. She had graying hair pulled into a tight bun and kind, tired eyes. She pushed a small serving cart into the room, carefully avoiding the torn pieces of the wedding dress still lying on the floor from last night."I told the guards I didn't want anything," Flora said, her voice hoarse."You must drink something," the maid insisted gently, pouring steaming chamomile tea into a porcelain cup. "Mr. Sterling left early this morning for a syndicate meeting. He ordered the staff to ensure you eat. My name is Elara, by the way. I am the head housekeeper here.""Did he order you to call me 'ma'am' too?" Flora asked bitterly."No. That is

"Flora," Arthur’s voice came through the heavy oak door again. "Open it. Now."Panic exploded in Flora’s chest. She looked at the red dossier in her trembling hands and the open bottom drawer. She didn't have time to put it back perfectly. If she messed up the stack of papers, he would know.Flora slammed the drawer shut. She twisted the small brass key, locking it, and pulled it out. She dropped to her knees, shoved the red folder deep underneath the heavy leather sofa in the study, and tossed the key back under the lowest bookshelf."I'm coming!" Flora yelled, her voice cracking. She ran out of the study, pulling the wooden door shut behind her. She took a deep breath, trying to slow her racing heart, and unlocked the main bedroom doors.Arthur stood in the hallway. He wore a fresh dark gray suit, looking sharp and incredibly dangerous. Doni stood a few feet behind him, holding a large, black garment bag.Arthur stepped into the room. His dark eyes immediately scanned Flora from hea
