The army marched for two more days. They crossed the mountain range through a narrow pass, the path winding between jagged peaks and deep ravines. The air grew colder with every mile. The wolves' breath misted in the frigid air. Snow began to fall, light at first, then heavier, until the world was white and silent. Elara rode at the front, her silver eyes scanning the horizon. She could feel Lysandra now—a cold, distant presence that pulsed at the edge of her consciousness like a second heartbeat. The vampire queen was waiting for them. She had been waiting for centuries. Soon, the whispers said. Soon you will face her. Soon you will end this. Elara reached inside herself, into the hollow place where the First Wolf's power lived. It surged to meet her, warm and eager. The golden light flickered beneath her skin, ready to be unleashed. She was ready. But she was also afraid. She had been afraid for so long that she had almost forgotten what it felt like to be brave. But she kne

The wolf was restless. Elara felt it constantly now—a living presence in the hollow place where her wolf had slept for twenty-two years. It paced. It prowled. It pushed against the walls of her consciousness, demanding freedom. She had given it a taste of the world outside, and now it wanted more. She couldn't blame it. She had been caged her whole life. The wolf had been caged even longer. They were both tired of being trapped. But she couldn't let it out. Not yet. Not until she had control. I need to build a cage, she thought. A cage inside my mind. A place where the wolf can wait until I'm ready. You cannot cage what is already caged, said the First Wolf. You must befriend it. You must become one with it. "I don't know how," she whispered. "I don't know how to be one with something that terrifies me." Then you must learn. --- She spent the morning in meditation. She sat in the snow, her eyes closed, her breathing slow and even. She reached inside herself, into the hollow

The camp was quiet. The wolves had returned from the hunt victorious, their spirits high, their blood singing with the thrill of the kill. They had gathered around the fires, sharing stories, laughing, celebrating. But Elara could not join them. She sat apart from the others, staring at the flames, her mind churning with thoughts she could not escape. She had killed three vampires. She had led the hunt. She had done what needed to be done. So why did she feel so hollow? Because you are not a killer, said the First Wolf. You are a survivor. There is a difference. She didn't know if she believed that anymore. She had killed Derrick. She had killed Lysandra's general. She had killed the vampires in the clearing. She was becoming good at it. Too good. She looked at her hands. They were steady. They did not tremble. They had not trembled during the hunt. They had not trembled when she had torn out the vampire's throat. She should have felt something. Guilt. Sorrow. Remorse. Anything

Elara woke before dawn, her body humming with a strange electricity. She had slept deeply, dreamlessly, and for the first time in weeks, she felt truly rested. The hollow emptiness that had been gnawing at her was quiet, distant, as if it had retreated to some dark corner of her mind. She stretched and rose from her furs. Kaelen was still asleep beside her, his breathing slow and even. She did not wake him. She slipped out of the tent and walked to the edge of camp, her bare feet silent on the frozen ground. The stars were still out, scattered across the sky like diamonds on black velvet. The air was cold and clean, biting at her skin. She closed her eyes and breathed it in. I feel different today, she thought. Stronger. Clearer. Like something has shifted inside me. Something has, said the First Wolf. You are beginning to understand. You are beginning to accept. Accept what? Accept who you are. Accept what you were made to be. The war is coming, Elara. You must be ready. She

The morning of the test dawned cold and grey. Elara stood at the edge of the camp, her silver eyes fixed on the distant mountains. The war was coming. Lysandra was waiting. And today, Kaelen was going to test her. He had told her last night, his voice quiet and serious. "I need to see what you can do," he had said. "Not in training. Not in sparring. In a real fight. Against real enemies. I need to know you're ready." She had nodded. She understood. He needed to trust her. He needed to know she could lead the pack into battle without getting them all killed. She was ready. --- The test was a raid. A small group of vampires had been spotted in a valley to the east. They were scouts, probably, sent by Lysandra to track the army's movements. They were alone. They were vulnerable. Kaelen had chosen Elara to lead the raid. "Take a squad of wolves," he had said. "Find the vampires. Kill them. Return before nightfall." She had nodded. She had chosen her squad carefully—Sera, Alpha
