Cassie. The front door of the main house clicked shut behind me, the sound final and heavy. My feet were unsteady as I stepped over the polished marble floor. The satin of my gown felt cold and heavy against my skin, damp from fog.My hands were still stiff, the raw scrapes on my palms throbbing from the frantic ride on the back of Mark’s motorcycle. I wanted to run straight up the stairs, tear the choking diamond collar off my neck, and hide from the entire world."Step into the parlor, Cassandra." Eleanor’s voice was a cold blade that cut straight through the darkness of the hallway. My muscles locked. I turned slowly, my heart slamming against my ribs as I forced my legs to move toward the arched entrance of the formal room. The chandelier was fully lit, casting a blinding, harsh light over the room.Eleanor was sitting on the high-backed velvet sofa, her silver hair perfectly immaculate, her face a rigid, frozen mask of disgust. She didn't look like a mother-in-law; she looked lik

Mark.I had just driven into the estate when I saw my furious angry bird storming out. God. She looked more beautiful.Except for the missing shoes. She's approaching me now, which I'm not sure why. I reach out to hold her. “He—”Twack! The sting on my left cheek was sharp, hot, and completely earned. I had only realized it was completely earned when the words slipped her mouth. The mouth I can't wait to claim again. I didn't move an inch. I didn't even turn my face back until the echo of her slap died down just as it came.My jaw was clamped tight, the muscle jumping against my skin as I looked down from the saddle of my machine at the shivering, wild-eyed woman standing in the gravel. She was panting now, her chest heaving underneath that ruined green satin dress. Her bare feet were caked in mud, and her raw, scraped palms were shaking from the sheer force of the blow she had just delivered to my face. She looked small against the dark silhouette of the iron gates, but the fire b

Cassie.“Hey!”“Emmm…” I stuttered, wrapping my hands on my body like it would shield me. My teeth still clattered anyways. “What am I doing here?”“Yes, Mark!” I sigh while cool air lives. He tilts his head, the fire from the cigar going off and for the first time in my life I saw his pupil dilate. Am I forgetting to mention how cute it is. “What do you think?”“Whatever.”His expression turns cold again but Damn I can't leave him here. Not after I've seen him like this. “You know…” I start, breaking the silence. “My Dad's not gonna let you in for the night.” He tilts his head with this smug look, this time his burrows furrowed. And that was it. He kept staring at me. I might sink into the floor or disappear in the cold. “What?” I laugh. It was an outburst, I swear I was holding it. “Your Dad? You want me to come in?”“No. Come on, Mark what do you want?”As if I've delivered the most important information in his life, he threw his cigar and mounted his bike. “Get in, Cassie.

Cassie. The roar of the motorcycle engine finally died as Mark pulled up against the cracked curb of my parents’ house. The early morning sun was just starting to pierce through, casting a pale, cold light over the quiet street. My knees were shaking as I swung my leg over the leather saddle, my sneakers hitting the damp gravel of the sidewalk. My lips still felt swollen, burning from the weight of his mouth.I didn't look at him as I pulled the helmet off my head and shoved it roughly against his hard chest."Thanks for the ride," I muttered, my voice tight and flat as I turned toward the front gate.Buzz.The sudden, sharp vibration of my phone inside my denim pocket made me stop dead in my tracks. I pulled the screen out, my eyes blinking against the bright white light of a fresh text notification from my banking app.“Vanguard Tech has initiated a direct wire transfer. Amount: $20,000.00. Status: Completed.”My breath caught completely in my throat. A sudden, hot wave of blinding

Cassie.“Hey mom!”“Morning, Angel.” Rock music blasted through invincible speakers. I nodded with a giggle as she kissed me. My mum would never forget to do that. “Mom I didn’t know you—”“Still listened to music?”“No!” I laughed. “Far from that. I mean, rock?” “I’m still a young bitch babe,” She winked at me. “Yes, Yes. Mom.” The kitchen smelled of burnt toast and old linoleum, a far cry from the marble-and-lavender scent of the Jeffson estate.I sat down at the wooden table, staring down at my bowl of oatmeal while the old refrigerator hummed against the wall. The morning sun was weak, filtering through the cracked blinds and catching the light on my phone screen. “Whatever,” I sighed. Well, the notification was still there. Twenty thousand dollars. It was a fortune to my family, but to a Jeffson, it was just pocket change dropped on a curb to keep a problem away.My mother now stood by the sink, rinsing out a coffee mug, her shoulders slightly hunched under her faded floral
