POV: CharlotteI noticed the books first, though it took me longer than it should have to actually notice that I’d noticed. There was a new one in the library every few days, sitting on the small side table near the reading chair where I always sat, never announced, never explained, just there when I came in like it had always belonged in that exact spot. The first time I assumed Helen had ordered something for the household generally and it had simply ended up in my path by accident. The second time, a collection of essays by a writer I’d mentioned once, in passing, weeks ago, during one of our midnight conversations in the kitchen, I started paying closer attention.By the fourth book I’d stopped pretending it was coincidence. The coffee was harder to explain away too. I’d never told anyone exactly how I liked it, not the temperature, not the exact way I let it cool slightly before drinking because I’d burned my tongue too

POV: Charlotte‎The invitation came through Helen on a Wednesday morning, a small cream card left on my breakfast plate instead of a message, which I’d already learned was simply how Eleanor preferred to do things. Lunch. Thursday. The restaurant near the foundation’s offices. Just the two of us.‎I read it twice before looking up at Helen, who was already pretending to be busy with the coffee pot.‎”Did she say why?” I asked.‎”She didn’t say anything to me beyond the details,” Helen said. “Mrs. Blackwood senior rarely explains herself in advance.”‎I mentioned it to Damien that evening, half expecting him to know something about it, but he seemed as genuinely surprised as I was.‎”She’s never invited anyone to lunch alone before,” he said, frowning slightly at his plate. “Not even me, not just the two of us, not since I was a teenager.&rdq

POV: CharlotteHelen mentioned it without realizing she was mentioning anything at all.“Mr. Blackwood wants the car ready earlier than usual tomorrow,” she said, going through the week’s schedule with me the way she did most mornings, more out of habit than necessity at this point. “Half past nine instead of his usual eleven. Something about an appointment downtown.”“Did he say which one?” I asked, careful to keep my voice as ordinary as the question itself.“He didn’t say. You know how he is about his schedule.” Helen moved on to the next item on her list, completely unaware she’d handed me anything at all.I sat with it for the rest of the day, turning it over, telling myself there was nothing unusual about a half past nine appointment, that businessmen had appointments at all hours, that I was building an entire theory out of nothing more than a single sentence and a brass plaqu

POV: CharlotteI decided to say something on a Tuesday, and that's because I’d run out of ways to keep not saying it.I’d carried it for days, the building, the brass plaque, the careful way his face had looked walking out those glass doors, the list of specialties I’d read late into the night until the words had started to blur together into something I couldn’t unsee. I’d told myself there were reasonable explanations every time the thought resurfaced, and every time, the explanations had felt thinner than the last.I rehearsed it twice in the mirror before dinner, which felt absurd even as I was doing it, standing there in my own room practicing how to ask my husband whether he was sick. I didn’t manage to find a version that sounded less direct than simply saying the thing itself, so by the time dinner ended I’d given up trying to dress it in softer language.I found him in his study afterward, door open, the way it usually was unless he was on a call he didn’t want overheard. He

POV: DamienI noticed it first on a Wednesday, somewhere between explaining a board decision I hadn’t intended to explain and realizing I’d been talking for almost ten minutes about something that had nothing to do with her question in the first place.“I asked if you wanted tea,” Charlotte said, amused, the kettle already boiling behind her. “You gave me a full history of Whitfield’s voting record instead.”“You asked why he’s always so difficult about quarterly approvals.”“I asked in passing. You answered like it was a deposition.”I caught myself smiling, an actual smile, not the careful, calibrated version I gave to board members and reporters. “Apologies. Old habit.”“Don’t apologize. I asked for tea and got a corporate history lesson. That’s better entertainment than anything on television lately.”It had become a pattern over the past two weeks, conversations that started about one thing and ended up somewhere else entirely, somewhere I hadn’t planned to go and didn’t entirely
