She'd been standing outside for four minutes. Nathalia knew this because she'd checked her phone twice 9:51, then 9:53 and was now actively arguing with herself about checking it a third time. She didn't. She shoved it back into her bag and looked up at the building instead, which was honestly worse. Cole Industries. Eighty-three floors. She'd looked it up. Black glass all the way to the top, the kind of building that didn't care whether the sun was out because it made its own light or rather, it took everyone else's and kept it. The Cole Industries logo sat above the entrance in brushed gold lettering that was somehow both understated and the loudest thing on the block. No unnecessary flourishes. Just the name. Just the fact of it. Nathalia had grown up in a town where the tallest building was the library, and even that only had four floors and smelled like carpet cleaner. She crossed the street. The revolving door was heavier than it looked. She nearly didn't push hard enou

She set four alarms. This was not something Nathalia would ever admit to another human being but she set four alarms — five-fifteen, five-twenty, five-twenty-five, and five-thirty as the final threat — because she had learned in university that she was the kind of person who could negotiate with a single alarm in her sleep and wake up forty minutes later genuinely believing she'd made a reasonable decision. She was at the forty-second floor by six thirty-eight. Seven minutes early for a six forty-five that was already itself early, which meant she was essentially early for being early, which felt both excessive and completely necessary. The floor was different at this hour. Quieter in a way that had texture — not empty, not asleep, just stripped back to its essentials. The overhead lights hadn't fully brightened yet, running at something lower and cooler, and the city outside the windows was doing that particular early morning thing where it looked almost soft, the skyline blurr

The problem with Damien Cole was that he was never wrong. Not never wrong in the arrogant, delusional way of people who simply refused to acknowledge their mistakes. Wrong in the genuinely, irritatingly, statistically improbable way of someone whose instincts were calibrated to a frequency most people couldn't access. In four days Nathalia had watched him make seven decisions that looked questionable in the moment and turned out to be correct within the hour. She'd stopped being surprised by day three. She'd started being annoyed by day four. Day five she walked in and found an email waiting for her that made her annoyed before she'd even taken her jacket off. It was from him. Sent at 5:47 a.m. Bennett. Harlow account, revert the timeline I sent through yesterday. Use the original. She stared at it. She pulled up the Harlow account timeline. The one she'd spent an hour and forty minutes restructuring yesterday afternoon based on the parameters he'd given her tighten the delive

The message said: You did good work today. That was it. That was all. Five words. No punctuation at the end. No sign off. Just five words from a man who communicated in instructions and single-word responses and the occasional fine that Maggie had taught her to receive as high praise. Nathalia sat on the subway two stops past her station with her phone in both hands and read it four times. You did good work today. Not the documents were correct or the Alderman reschedule was handled appropriately or any of the other flat, functional acknowledgments she'd collected over the past week like small careful coins. Not fine. Not nothing. You did good work today. Personal. Direct. Chosen. She got off at the next stop and stood on the platform while the train pulled away and people flowed around her and the city made its noise and she stood very still in the middle of all of it holding her phone. She typed back three different responses. Deleted all three. Typed: Thank you. Sent i

Nathalia didn't ask directly. She never asked directly about the things that mattered most she'd learned that about herself somewhere around age sixteen when she'd asked her mother a direct question about money and watched her mother's face do something that took three days to un-do. Since then she'd developed a whole architecture of indirect approaches for the things she actually needed to know, and she'd gotten quite good at it, and she wasn't above using it now. She waited until Thursday. Thursday because by Thursday she and Maggie had settled into a rhythm that felt not friendship exactly, something more useful than friendship, something that had the bones of it without the performance. Maggie brought her tea sometimes. She brought Maggie coffee from the fourth floor sometimes. They talked in the mornings in the specific shorthand of two people who had figured out each other's frequency without making anything of it. Thursday morning. Maggie's tea already made. The floor stil
