All Chapters of The Past Between Us: Chapter 131 - Chapter 140

We left under the cover of early morning before the city fully woke. Victoria arranged a quiet boat and three people she trusted with her life. I held the last known location in my mind the entire way. The sea stretched wide and empty around us. No one spoke much. The only sound was the low engine and the water against the hull. My thoughts stayed fixed on the man who had somehow sent that final proof of life. The island rose out of the water like a forgotten place. Broken docks. Stone buildings covered in vines. Empty windows that stared out at the sea. From a distance it looked like no one had stepped on the shore for years. We pulled the boat into a hidden cove and moved inland on foot. The ground felt soft under our shoes. Everything about the surface said this land had been left behind. We reached the main structure and the truth showed itself fast. The doors that looked rusted from outside opened into clean halls. Lights glowed along the ceilings. The air carried the sharp scent

LilaI moved through the lower halls alone while Victoria and the others kept watch at the main junction. Every step had to stay light, I kept my back close to the wall and listened for any shift in the quiet. The need to find him pulled me forward more than fear ever could because I had come too far to turn back now. A soft sound drifted from somewhere ahead. At first it was almost too quiet to notice then it grew clearer…someone was singing, the voice was low and a little rough but the melody was one I knew better than my own breath. It was the song Damien always sang to Rose when she could not sleep. The same gentle tune he used on nights when the house felt too big and the dark felt too long. He would sit on the edge of her bed and let the words fall soft and steady until her eyes closed. My feet started moving before my mind fully caught up. The song pulled me like a thread I had been searching for since the day the world broke open. I followed the sound around a corner and dow

I left the quiet corner and moved deeper into the lower levels. The notebook stayed tucked against my side but my mind had already shifted forward. Every hall looked the same yet I kept walking. Victoria’s voice came soft through the small radio at my ear. She and the others were still holding the upper paths clear. I answered with one short word and kept going. The need to reach him sat heavier than any warning. The air grew cooler as the path sloped down. Lights sat farther apart and the floors showed more wear. I passed empty rooms and locked barriers without stopping. My steps stayed careful but the pace increased. Somewhere in this place he was still breathing. The proof had already reached my hands. Now I only needed to close the distance.A long corridor stretched ahead. At the far end a single door stood half open. Light spilled from inside in a thin line. I slowed and listened. No footsteps. No voices. Only a faint shift of movement. I raised the radio and gave Victoria the l

The boat carried us away from the island and toward a quiet stretch of coast. Victoria had arranged a safe house hidden among tall trees and far from any main road. Damien sat in the back with a medical team watching his every breath. I stayed close but not too close. The grip he had placed on my wrist still lingered in my mind. His words repeated themselves whenever the engine grew quiet. The safe house felt open and clean, Damien walked through the front door and stopped. His eyes moved from wall to wall as if the place might hold answers. Everything felt unfamiliar to him. He touched the back of a chair and then the edge of a table. No recognition came. He kept glancing at me without understanding the pull that made him do it.We settled him in a ground floor room with a clear view of the garden. The children came in soon after. Liam stood near the doorway and spoke in a careful voice. He told Damien about school and the books he liked. Damien listened and nodded but the words s

The doctor came early that morning and spent a long time checking Damien. She asked him simple questions about colors and numbers and the names of objects in the room. His answers came faster than the day before. She wrote notes and then asked to speak with me alone in the hall. Her voice stayed low. She said his mind was pulling pieces back quicker than expected. The speed worried her. Recovery this fast could strain him in ways that left lasting harm.I returned to the room and sat with him while the children played outside under Victoria’s watch. Damien spoke more that morning. Short sentences. Careful observations about the light through the trees and the sound of birds. Each new detail seemed to cost him something. By midday he pressed his fingers to his temples and closed his eyes. The pain arrived without warning and left him quiet for hours. That night the house settled into its usual quiet. Victoria checked every lock twice. The medical team rested in the side rooms. I staye
