All Chapters of Crescent Rivals : Chapter 81 - Chapter 90

The cold arrived sharper than the day before and settled in early.Dane and Ezra stayed close to home. No path called them out yet. They moved through the morning without rush. The house held the chill even with the fire low.Ezra tested the side shutter first. “Still a little give at the bottom edge. We tightened it but the wood itself is worn.”Dane brought the small box of screws and the hand plane. “We can shave a bit and set a longer screw. Will hold better.”They worked side by side. Dane held the shutter steady against the frame. Ezra planed the edge in short careful strokes. Talk started easy and stayed between the work and the days ahead.Ezra said, “Quiet stretch of days like this still feels new. I wake up and listen for the old pull. Keep expecting it to show.”“Does it?”“No. Stays gone. That is the part that surprises me every time.”Dane kept the shutter firm. “The pull only returns if we feed it. Stop feeding it and it starves.”“I know. Still catch myself waiting fo

Dusk caught them on the final bend and the house appeared smaller than it had any right to be.Dane and Ezra reached the door as the last light left the fields behind. They stepped inside. The walls closed in after the long open stretch but the feeling stayed soft. Not tight. Just close.Ezra touched the doorframe. “Smaller. After all that space it sits different. Not bad. Just different.”Dane moved straight to the hearth. “Fields do that. Make the roof feel lower for a bit. Fire will even it out.”He stacked the kindling and lit it. Flame took hold quick. They pulled off their coats and hung them side by side. No list waited. No task called. They stood near the heat and let the evening settle around them.Ezra held his hands to the fire. “Land we saw keeps playing behind my eyes. That rise. The way the grass ran on without a fence in sight.”“I still feel the road under my feet,” Dane said. “Even standing still. Long walk stays in the legs.”“Stretch of days ahead looks wider after

Full dark closed over the trees like something final and quiet.Dane and Ezra stopped near the small stand of trunks and made camp with few moves. They cleared a patch of ground with their boots. Gathered dry sticks from the edge of the trees. Lit a small fire that took hold fast in the cold air. The blanket opened between them. They sat close, shoulders nearly touching, and let the night settle around the flames.Ezra held his hands out to the heat. “Dark feels finished out here. No light left over from any window or path.”Dane pushed a thin stick into the fire. “Finished is the word. Nothing from the old places reaches this far.”“Old pull has fallen away completely. I keep checking for it in my head. Nothing comes back.”“That is how it should be by now. Walking did most of the work. Night finishes it.”Ezra nodded once. “Weather stays clear like this, we could stay out a second day. Keep the fire. Stretch the blanket. Make the food last.”“We could. Sky has no cloud in it. Cold w

Late light caught them still moving and the cold came down harder with every step.Dane and Ezra slowed as the sky began to lose its color. The open ground stretched on without a break. No end showed itself. Their breath hung white and longer in the air now.Ezra spoke first. “We could make another simple camp. Or keep walking until full dark. Either one sits fine with me.”Dane looked at the thinning light. “Either choice feels free in a way the old life never allowed.”“That is it exactly. Old life always had one right answer waiting. Out here both answers work the same.”“Freedom is the only measure left. Nothing else counts the day anymore.”They walked a little farther while the light faded by slow degrees. A low sheltered place appeared near a dry stone wall. The wall blocked the worst of the rising wind. Ground behind it stayed flatter and clearer of the taller grass.Dane nodded toward it. “There. Good enough for the night.”They stopped. Cleared a small space with their boots

Late light found us higher on the long gentle slope and the wind finally let go of its edge.I slowed. Ezra slowed beside me. Our boots sank a little in the softer grass. We stopped where the rise leveled and the air felt kinder on my face. Below us the land dropped away in a wide darkening sweep. Behind us the slope climbed clean and steady.Ezra’s voice came low. “Is this far enough for now? Or does the land still invite us onward?”I looked at the open drop. “I do not know. Both feel true at the same time.”“I can no longer tell the difference between enough and more.”“The difference no longer matters. That is what we learned out here.”We stood a moment longer. The last color was draining from the sky. A thin line of brighter light still clung to the far edge of the land and then it too began to fade.Ezra said, “We could keep going. Light is not fully gone.”“We could stop. Wind is softer here.”“Either one sits right. That still feels new.”“New and solid.”We chose the stop. N
