Ella's POVCyrus seemed worried I'd say no, so he pressed on."With your current reputation, any overseas university or research institute would jump at the chance to have you. You could easily take Lily and get out of the West Coast. Start fresh somewhere else—it could also put some distance between you and the Blackwood Pack's drama.""Sounds good in theory."I didn't say yes, but I didn't shut him down either."I'll give it some serious thought once I see the formal contract."With that, I took Lily's hand and turned to leave."Daddy!"Noah came bolting out of the school gate, his backpack bouncing as he sprinted straight toward Damien, who was waiting by the curb.In all the years we were together, Damien rarely bothered to show up for school pickup.A few parents nearby slowed their pace, their eyes locking onto Damien. He looked like he'd been under that kind of attention his entire life; he didn't even flinch.I had no intention of sticking around in his orbit, so I turned to w

Ella's POVTheodore instantly pulled her close with an indulgent, cooing tone."Sweetie, just a little longer. We're still waiting on one very important guest."I rolled my eyes and looked away.No matter how many times I witnessed it, I'd never get used to watching these two aging werewolves act like a pair of lovestruck teenagers in public.Just then, the private room door swung open. A waiter stepped in, keeping his gaze respectfully lowered."Alpha Marcus just called in. He's been held up and will be running late, so please don't wait for him.""Then we won't wait," Damien said.As soon as the first main course was served, Chloe immediately set to work cutting up a chicken cutlet for Noah.Theodore grabbed his dinner knife, slicing up Eleanor's food into bite-sized pieces."Chloe's the best," Noah mumbled around a bite of chicken. "Nobody ever cuts my food this neatly."Lily lifted her chin. "Did you fo

Ella's POVMarcus shot him a cold, dismissive look and didn't bother with pleasantries."What were you trying to do to Ella just now?" he asked.Theodore's smile faltered."Ah, nothing..." he stammered. "She was being disrespectful, and as her father, I was only trying to discipline her. Sorry you had to see that.""She's twenty-seven. But you just charged at her and tried to attack her in front of her own daughter. That's your idea of discipline?" Marcus demanded."No... That's not what happened. I was just angry." Theodore tried to defend himself. "She actually turned down the precious opportunity Alpha Damien offered her, and then she had the nerve to say she wouldn't submit to an alpha—""So that makes it okay for you to lay your hands on her?" Marcus pressed on.Theodore opened his mouth, but no words came out.Marcus continued, "Do you even deserve to be her father?"The words landed softly, yet Theodo

Ella's POVMarcus held Damien's gaze, denying him even the slightest opening to deflect."If you understand, answer me."Damien's Adam's apple bobbed. The employment contract was already crumpled beyond recognition, its edges digging into his fingers. After a long pause, he finally lowered his head. "Fine."Only then did Marcus signal his assistant to wheel him out.Lily and I followed, hand in hand.Once we were in the elevator, I turned to Marcus. "Thank you for stepping in back there.""You didn't need me to." Marcus cast an approving glance at Lily."Even if I hadn't been there, Theodore wouldn't have been able to hurt you."Lily nodded at once. "Of course not—because I would've protected Mommy!"She held up her hand and added earnestly, "And I wasn't even using my full strength."Mommy says we shouldn't hurt people for no reason.""Well done, little one," Marcus praised.Lily

Ella's POVLily jumped up from the sofa. "Wow!"She circled around me, then stopped in front of me and gave me a big thumbs-up."Mommy, you'll totally going to be the hottest she-wolf at the summit!" she said."That's only because you know one person there—me," I replied."Even if I knew everyone there, you'd still be the prettiest."Claire said with a smile, "I agree with Lily."I looked at Marcus. He didn't comment right away. Instead, he held out his hand to me."Come here," he said.I gathered up my dress and walked over to him. "What?""You're missing something."The assistant opened a deep blue velvet box, revealing a delicate white pearl necklace. Each pearl was perfectly uniform, with a simple moonstone pendant hanging at the center.I reached for it, but Marcus picked it up before I could."Sit over here," he began.I followed his gaze to the cushioned chair in front of t
