Lily’s pov I existed somewhere beneath the surface of myself, in a place that wasn't quite sleep and wasn't quite waking, a heavy grey static pressing in from every side.Voices reached me sometimes, distorted and distant, layered over each other in ways I couldn't fully untangle. A woman's voice, careful and clinical. Another, older, breaking apart with something that sounded like grief. I couldn't place either of them properly, couldn't hold onto the shapes of their words long enough to understand what they meant. Time didn't work properly in that grey space either, I couldn't tell if minutes had passed since the last voice reached me, or hours, or something longer still that I had no way of measuring at all.But I always knew when Alexander was near.It wasn't the sound of his voice exactly, not at first, it was something else, something I couldn't name, a particular shift in the quality of the air around me, a warmth settling over the cold, heavy grey that otherwise surrounded me
