It started with a journal. Not a deliberate journal — not the kind she had bought with intention, sitting in a stationery shop somewhere and deciding that she was going to document this period of her life with purpose and discipline. She had never been that kind of person. Had always found the self-consciousness of deliberate journaling slightly paralyzing, the awareness of an imagined future reader making every sentence feel performed rather than genuine. This had started differently. It had started on a night about eight months ago, somewhere in the middle of the worst of it, when she had been lying awake at three in the morning with Emeka asleep beside her and the thoughts refusing to organise themselves into anything she could manage and she had reached for her phone simply to have somewhere to put them. She had opened the notes application — the same application she used for grocery lists and business reminders and the things she needed to remember that she was always in danger o

The publisher's name was Yetunde.Adaeze discovered this when she clicked through to the profile that had sent the message, finding there a woman in her early forties with the particular quality of someone who had built something deliberately and inhabited it with the ease of long ownership. The publishing house was called Rootword Press — small, independent, Lagos-based, with a catalogue that Adaeze spent an evening reading through with the careful attention she brought to things she wanted to understand properly before forming an opinion about. What she found impressed her.Not because the books were famous — they were not, at least not in the way that famous meant commercially ubiquitous. But because they were good. She could tell, reading the descriptions and the excerpts available online, that whoever had chosen these books had chosen them with taste and with genuine conviction about what they were worth rather than what they would sell. There was a quality to the catalogue — a c

She gave him the manuscript on a Sunday. Not printed — she had considered printing it, had thought about what it would mean to hand him a physical object, pages he could hold and turn and set down and return to, something with weight that matched the weight of its contents. But in the end she had sent it to his email address, which felt more honest somehow. More in keeping with the way everything between them had been communicated in the year the manuscript described — through screens, through messages, through the particular intimacy and distance of words on a phone in the dark. She sent it at ten in the morning while he was in the sitting room with Kelechi watching something football-related that Kelechi had apparently been anticipating all week. She sent it without announcement — simply opened her laptop in the study, attached the document, typed his name in the address field, and pressed send. Then she closed the laptop and went to the kitchen and began the Sunday cooking that was

The days that followed had a particular quality. Not the sharp urgent quality of the worst moments of the past year — the discovery, the confrontation, the dark bedroom confession, the paternity results, the coffee shop. Those had arrived with the particular velocity of things that required immediate response, that could not be sat with for long before they demanded to be addressed. This was different. This had the slower quality of something that needed to be digested rather than responded to. Something that required the particular patience of a woman learning to distinguish between what needed her immediate attention and what needed simply her presence, her willingness to remain inside it without rushing it toward resolution. She went to the business every morning. This was deliberate. The business had become, over the course of the year, the clearest expression of herself outside the domestic register — the place where she was most simply and straightforwardly competent, most clear

The book came out on a Thursday. This too felt appropriate, though she had not chosen the date — Yetunde had chosen it, based on the particular calculations that publishers made about timing and market and the specific window of reception that gave a book the best chance of finding the audience that needed it. Thursday. Not a Tuesday, with all the history that day carried. Not a Monday, which felt too much like a beginning. Thursday — midweek, midstride, the particular day of someone who has been going for a while and has not yet stopped. She had thought about whether to make anything of the launch publicly. Whether to post something on the platforms that had grown considerably over the months of writing and sharing — the women's groups where the first post had landed, the Denisa's Media channel that had become something larger than she had built it for, the various spaces where the particular quality of her voice had found the people who needed it.She had decided against a formal an
