Chapter 11

“How many seven years do you get in a lifetime?” I looked at Jordan. That was a question I used to ask myself more than I could count. It was hard to walk away from seven years of history. I was willing to put up just a little more for the sake of the seven years. Because of those years together, I trusted that Jordan would change. Now, I was able to snap out of it. Those seven years shouldn't be the reason I keep letting myself get hurt.At least I managed to cut my losses after seven years. “Jordan. “You only get so many seven-year chapters in a lifetime.“I’m done spending another seven years on you.” His complexion turned ashen. I brushed past him. Out of nowhere, Jordan hugged me from behind, his voice choked with sobs. “Don’t go. “Don’t abandon me, Eve.“I can end things with Molly. “I can move out. “You can hit or yell at me. “I just want you to come back.” I peeled his fingers off me, one by one. It felt as though I was breaking the sha

I stopped updating my social media. The evidence spoke for itself. The ultimate revenge wasn’t screaming in tears. All it took was to present the facts for the world to see. Jordan issued an apology shortly after. His post was long. Jordan admitted to being silly, selfish, and weak. He felt that he had failed me after everything I had done for him in the last seven years.Jordan claimed that the wedding in Slandsdeca was the biggest mistake he had ever made. He said I was never the one at fault. He was the one who threw everything we had away. Nobody was buying his story. “The law wouldn’t exist if an apology could fix things.” “You’re not sorry because you were wrong. You’re sorry because you got caught.” “Keep OP’s name out of your name and leave her alone.” “Too little too late.” Molly still refused to admit any fault. She started turning on the waterworks on a livestream. With her eyes welling up, Molly insisted that she was no side piece and that h

The assignment took me by surprise. “I just started today.” “So?” Dean met my gaze, his voice tender but firm. “Competence doesn’t wait in line for seniority.” It was at that very moment that I felt a lump in my throat. So this was what it felt like to be respected. It wasn’t a dismissive brush-off. Nor was it being relegated to the sink to do the dishes. It certainly wasn’t being told off after voicing my concerns. Instead, it was having someone see me for who I was, what I was made of, and my choices.I was a whole person. … Time flew by. I had reached the point where thinking of Jordan no longer hurt.Every now and then, I could hear updates about him from our mutual friends. Jordan had a massive falling out with Molly. He paid for most of the wedding in Slandsdeca. The diamond ring, the wedding dress, the venue, the flight, and the hotel cost close to a million bucks. After the whole scandal, Jordan asked for the ring back. Molly refused to giv

Dean was more invested in the wedding prep than I was. He was right there with me, picking out the flower arrangement. Dean came along to my wedding dress fittings. He went through the guest list and checked it more than twice. Dean even took the time to ask earnestly whether I fancied the font for our save-the-date. I made fun of him for being so meticulous. Dean said, “A wedding is more than a ceremony. “It’s my way of showing everyone how much I cherish you.” It was a beautiful sunny day on our wedding day. I stood at the altar in my wedding dress. Sitting along the aisle, Kendra bawled her eyes out. While wiping her tears, she mouthed to me. “You’re worth it.” I nodded with a smile. The wedding officiant asked Dean, “Do you take Eve Sawyer to be lawfully wedded wife?” Dean looked into my eyes, his gaze tender. “I do. “Through good times and bad, in sickness and in health, I choose to honor her, shield her, and support her.“Not to make her life re
