THE THIRD BOOK'S COVERELENA'S POVThe cover design arrives in August and I look at it for a long time before I show anyone.The press's designer has worked from the brief I gave the editor: the image of something that holds weight invisibly, that does its work below the surface, that is permanent without being dramatic. What arrived is not what I expected and is entirely correct.The cover is deep green — the specific green of deep tree canopy, the colour of something that has been doing its work in the dark and the light for a very long time. In the centre, in white, the title: What the Record Owes. Below it, in smaller white text: Documentation, Inheritance, and the Obligations of Truth. At the bottom, in the same white: Elena Blackwood-Vale.And beneath the text, so subtle you might miss it on first look: the faintest trace of a root system, drawn in slightly darker green against the background, the roots extending to the edges of the cover in all directions. Not dramatic. Present
