Chapter 1

I sat in the study and read through the divorce agreement again. The terms were listed clearly on paper. Under the property division section, I didn't ask for anything. The premarital house and the car would go to the woman I was married to, Eva Burnham. The shares in the company had nothing to do with me, either.I only had to take my own savings with me.I signed my name, Jeremy Holden, on the agreement.Three years ago, I had hoped that even though our marriage was just a transactional agreement, something good might come out of it if I put in enough effort.I was so stupid back then.I slid the document into an envelope and placed it on the coffee table. Then, I grabbed my phone and pulled up my conversation with Eva.I sent a message. "Please come home early today. There's something I want to discuss with you."A few minutes later, a reply popped up. "Okay."I turned off my phone and tossed it onto the couch.Turning around, I went to the kitchen and poured myself a gla

Chapter 2

I placed my phone on the coffee table, then grabbed the remote and changed the channels on TV.There was a variety show playing. Several celebrities were laughing onscreen, and their laughter was especially loud and grating.I leaned back on the couch, suddenly realizing how absurd I must've looked.I was sitting in a 2,000-square-foot house, watching over a marriage only in name as I waited for a woman who never cared about me to come home.Meanwhile, she was spending time with her first love as if she had every right to be, and she wasn't even sorry about it.After all, back when we were getting married, Eva told me very clearly that if it weren't for me, they wouldn't have come to this point. She was saying that I was the one who forced her to break up with Charlie, that I just abruptly entered the picture and came between them. She claimed that I used my family's status and that lawsuit to force her into a marriage.I wondered if she actually knew about the truth. In reali

Chapter 3

After finishing my cereal, I went upstairs and changed.I had an appointment with a housing agent today to view a property. After all, I had to find another place to stay before moving out.I didn't ask for anything on the divorce agreement, but that didn't mean I was penniless. I already had some savings before I got married.I might not have had a job in the past three years, but the Burnham family would give me five thousand dollars every month for living expenses. I didn't spend much of the money, so I had saved up quite a lot.It should be enough for me to rent a decent apartment and get by for a year or two without any issues. As for the future, I would just have to play it by ear.The agent was a young man with glasses who talked very fast. He showed me a two-bedroom apartment on the east side of town. It wasn't far from the city center, and the neighborhood was quite nice, too.He said, "Mr. Holden, the place has perfect natural lighting. The owner just had it renovated,

Chapter 4

Charlie was completely stunned.I turned and went up the stairs, leaving him alone in the living room.I opened my closet and began removing my clothes from the hangers. After three years, I didn't even have that many clothes to pack.Eva had never gone on vacation with me before, nor had she given me any gifts at all, be it on our wedding anniversary, my birthday, or Valentine's Day.Now that I thought about it, it really was an absurd relationship. After folding my last coat and stuffing it into the cardboard box, I was about to seal the box when my phone beeped. I took it out to find that it was a message from Eva. "I have a dinner appointment at night, so I won't be coming home for dinner. Charlie just moved in, so help him get settled in the guest room."I put down my phone and continued packing.By evening, I was done packing most of my closet and the study. When I went downstairs, Charlie was sitting on the couch in the living room, drinking coffee. Noticing the moveme

Chapter 5

The living room fell silent for a moment.Charlie sat on the couch, his fingers tightly gripping the handle of the mug as he stared at Eva, unblinking.Eva looked at me. There wasn't much of a change in her expression. There was no anger, sorrow, or even a bit of surprise. She just remained silent for several seconds before reaching out and taking the envelope. "When was this drafted?""Last week," I answered. She opened the envelope and pulled out the divorce agreement. Then, she read it from the first page to the last. When she saw the property division section, her frown deepened. "You don't want anything?""That's right," I replied."Not even this house?" she asked.I answered, "It was yours before we got married. It has nothing to do with me."She looked up at me. There was a look I couldn't quite decipher in her eyes. "Jeremy, are you sulking?"I almost laughed at the absurdity."Sulking?" I thought. I would only sulk if I still loved her. So, now that I didn't love

Chapter 6

The question came out of nowhere.I was stunned for a moment. Then, I thought about it earnestly. "I wouldn't call that regret. I just felt like it was a waste of time."Eva tapped lightly on the table. It was a very subtle movement, but I noticed it."A waste of time," she repeated. "You think marrying me was a waste of time?""What else?" I returned the question. "What did you think was worth remembering in the past three years?"She didn't say a word.I continued, "We've been married for three years. How many meals did we have together? How many times were you even home? Do you know what I like to eat? Do you even know when my birthday is?"I put down my spoon and looked at her. "You don't. You don't know anything, because for the past three years, you've been focusing on Charlie and Charlie only."Finally, there was a crack in her facade. Her eyebrows scrunched up a little, and her lips were pursed into a thin line."You knew what you were getting into when you agreed to g

Chapter 7

I turned to look at Eva.Her profile looked sharp, and her jaw was tight as she stared into the distance. "For the past three years, I haven't been treating you well at all.""It's okay. It's all in the past now." Lowering my head, I tucked the divorce decree into my bag. Then, I looked up at her. "Eva, I hope you live a happy life with Charlie."She finally turned to look at me. There was a complicated look in her gaze.It wasn't guilt, nor was it reluctance. It was more akin to confusion. She seemed to be confused as to why I was leaving so decisively, so calmly, and so mercilessly."You…" She parted her lips as if to say something, but in the end, she just said, "You, too."I smiled. Then, I turned around and headed toward a cab by the road."Don't worry about seeing me off." With my back to her, I waved. "Let's go our separate ways here."I opened the door of the cab and got in. Then, I gave the address for my new home.As the car started, I glanced in the rearview mirror

Chapter 8

After ending the call, I leaned against the couch and stared at the ceiling, zoning out for a moment.Birds were twittering outside the window. It sounded like quite a lively conversation. The house wasn't big, but it was quiet and nicely soundproofed. It was totally different from Eva's 2,000-square-foot villa, which was so empty that my voice echoed when I spoke.I lived in my new home for a week and decorated it just the way I liked.I would sleep in every morning, and when I woke up, I would get coffee downstairs and take a walk in the neighborhood. Then, I would come home to read books and binge-watch series.Life like this was a million times more comfortable than the three years I spent in Eva's home.On the eighth day, Dad called. "Jeremy, your mom wants you to drop by for a meal this weekend. She misses you, and she wants to talk to you."I promised I would be there.…On the day itself, I hailed a cab and headed to the Holden residence. I had just entered the yard wh

Chapter 9

Looking at the invitation, I was stunned for several seconds. Then, I laughed. They really wasted no time. It had only been two weeks since the divorce, but the two already had their invitations printed.By the looks of it, they were already preparing for their wedding early on. They were just waiting for me to get out of the way.I turned the invitation over to see some words printed at the back in small font. "Witness our love and share our bliss.""Love and bliss?" I thought. It felt ironic to see those words coming from Eva.I placed the invitation on the coffee table. Then, I leaned on the couch and pondered for a long time.I wondered if I should go.Logically speaking, I should be there. If I didn't go, I would look like I couldn't get over her. If I went, I would look like a gracious ex.But to be honest, I wasn't interested in their wedding at all.Picking up my phone, I sent Eva a message. "I received the invitation. Congratulations."This time, she replied right a

Chapter 10

After sending the message, I put my phone face down on the coffee table and continued watching the movie. But Eva's messages were getting more frequent by the day. Sometimes, she would send them late at night, and other times, she would send them early in the morning. The contents were getting weirder as well."I had to work late today. When I got back, I wanted to say 'I'm home' out of habit, but there was no one at home.""Back when you were around, the lights would always be on in the living room.""I passed by that bakery today. Now that I think about it, you were quite fond of desserts too, right?"I put up with it for several days, but in the end, I finally responded with, "Eva, you're already married. If there's anything you want to talk about, just talk to your husband."Eva didn't send any more messages for the whole day. Then, I received a long message from her. "Jeremy, I don't know what's wrong with me. After getting married to Charlie, I keep feeling like something
