All Chapters of The Alpha's Hidden Heir: Chapter 41 - Chapter 50

Finn’s escape plan fits inside an old grocery bag. That is how pathetic it is.Two birth certificates in a cracked plastic sleeve. Owen’s school records. A few folded bills from the jar behind the flour tin. One change of clothes for each of them. Bandages. Pain medicine. A half-empty bottle of water. A cheap knife from the kitchen drawer wrapped in a dish towel because Finn does not trust his hands to stop shaking. He sets everything on the bed and stares at it.Leave Riverton. The thought is enormous, impossible, and still smaller than the danger pressing against their door. Riverton is cruel, but it is familiar cruelty. Finn knows its bus routes, its cheap stores, its blind alleys, its clinics to avoid, its landlords who shout but rarely check documents if rent arrives in cash. Leaving means new streets, new questions, new work, new Alphas, and new places where Owen might make a mistake without knowing what kind of eyes are watching.

Everett stares at Owen Foster’s name until the letters stop looking like ink and start looking like a hand around Finn’s throat.Priority review.Medical clearance pending.Transportation available. The words are quiet, administrative, and monstrous in their simplicity. The Lawsons have not needed to drag Finn from Lark Street. They have only needed to find the person he would break himself trying to protect.Everett’s first instinct is immediate.“Get the car,” he tells Dean.Rachel steps in front of the desk before Dean can move. “No.”Everett’s eyes cut to her.Rachel does not back down. “If you arrive at Lark Street now, the Lawsons will know exactly what you know. If they are already watching Owen, they will move faster. They may relocate him, force a medical appointment, or use your interference to make Finn panic again.”“He is nineteen,&rdqu

Finn runs for three steps before he remembers Owen. The thought strikes so hard that he nearly stops in the middle of the lobby. He cannot leave without his brother. He cannot burst through the glass doors and vanish while Owen sits somewhere inside this building with his name in a Lawson file and a medical clearance appointment waiting like a trap.Behind him, the man from Harborline moves faster.“Wait,” he calls, his voice smooth now, too controlled after the sharp command he gave a second ago. “There seems to be a misunderstanding.”Finn does not look back.He forces himself to slow before the Alpha guards react fully. Running makes him prey. Panic makes him obvious. He pulls his fear down into the tightest place inside him and walks toward the hallway where Owen disappeared, even though his legs threaten to give out beneath him.The forced heat damage flares under his skin, fed by terror. Warmth rushes through him in a humiliating wave, and his scent slips before he can stop it.

Finn does not touch the phone until they reach the apartment.Owen carries it the whole way home, his fingers wrapped tightly around the black device as if it might vanish if he loosens his grip. Finn walks beside him in silence, checking every reflection, every parked car, every doorway where a man could stand and pretend not to watch. Twice, he thinks about taking the phone and throwing it into a drain. He does not. That frightens him almost as much as the phone itself. At the apartment, Finn locks the door, slides the chain into place, checks the window, and then checks the hallway through the peephole. Only after he has done all of that does he turn around.Owen stands in the middle of the room, pale and soaked from rain, still holding the phone.“Now,” Owen says.Finn’s stomach tightens. “Now what?”“Now you tell me.”Finn looks away. “You heard Dean.”“I heard pieces. I heard enough to know you were right about the placement program, and I hate that you were right.” Owen’s voice

Finn tells himself the nausea is from the call. That is easier than the other possibilities.Everett’s voice still lingers in the room long after Finn ends the call, low and controlled, touching places inside him he has spent days trying to bury. He should feel stronger after hanging up. He should feel proud that he ended the conversation before Everett could pull him into explanations, apologies, promises, and all the dangerous softness Finn no longer trusts.Instead, his stomach rolls. He barely makes it to the bathroom. The door hits the wall as he stumbles inside. His knees strike the cracked tile in front of the toilet, and he grips the rim with one hand while the other presses hard against his abdomen. Nothing comes up at first. Only a wave of sickness so deep and sudden that sweat breaks across the back of his neck.Owen appears in the doorway a second later. “Finn?”Finn lifts one hand without looking back. “Stay there.”“You are sick.”“I know.”“That is not an answer.”Finn
