"I don't want your money," Lillian said, clenching her fist She was in Gerald Haines's office again, but this time she was not the scared girl in scrubs. She was sitting upright, her new apartment key still in her coat pocket, her expensive green plant waiting on her sill.Lillian was as confident as ever. She had just avoided the greatest trap of her life; for the first time, she was not bound to any mystery chase, Dr. Ashton, Howard Geer, or anyone else that caused her unrest. She was simply herself. Nathaniel sat across from her, in a sweater, not a suit, looking like he had not slept since the board removed him.Unlike Lillian, whose radiant energy was shining, the woman did not want to be with him but refused to sign the divorce papers. ‘On her own terms,’ she said, not him.Was she playing hard yo get? Whatever Lillian did was working. For Nathaniel it was something different; it wasn't just because he was no longer CEO. He just wanted to live."It's not my money," he said,

Lillian did not confront Priya in the lab.She took the plant, thanked her, and set it on the counter. She smiled. She finished her practice shift. She went home and called Adrian."Priya Desai," she said. "Run a background check. Quietly."Adrian called back in an hour."Priya's family business has a $200,000 loan from a shell company owned by... guess who? P. Brooks. Filed three weeks ago. Right after Patricia posted bail. She's being paid, Lillian. $2,000 a month to be Vanessa's eyes."Lillian sat on the floor of her new apartment, the succulent from Nathaniel on the sill next to her expensive green plant, both of which were surviving despite being forgotten for a day.She had two plants now. One from a man who was learning how to love, one from a girl who was being paid to betray her.She texted Priya: Can we talk tomorrow before class? Just us?Priya replied instantly: Of course! Are you okay? The next morning, before class, Lillian met Priya in the empty courtyard where she had

Victoria Sloan did not look like a woman who had just quit as Patricia's lawyer to represent Lillian pro bono. She looked like a woman who had planned this exact hallway confrontation for three weeks and was enjoying every second. She stood in Lillian's building hallway in her charcoal suit, holding a leather folio, flanked by two building security guards. Nathaniel stood a foot away from Lillian's door, his fist still raised from banging, his sweater crooked, breathing hard like he had run up three flights.James stood behind him, holding his phone, looking guilty."I told him not to come," James mouthed to Lillian through the crack as she opened the door."I know," Lillian mouthed back.Victoria smiled, sharp and precise. "Mr. Brooks, you are currently in violation of a temporary restraining order filed by Mrs. Brooks. Even though the judge denied the extension, the original 72-hour order is still technically active until 5 p.m. today. It is 4:47 p.m."Nathaniel didn't look at Victo

For a man who had been trained to build fortresses, Nathaniel Brooks had never felt more useless inside one.Patricia held William's old hunting shotgun with hands that shook only slightly. The ankle monitor beeped every two seconds, a high, insistent whine that said she had violated house arrest.Vanessa sat frozen on the steps, holding Howard's daughter, Lily Greer, who was eight and had a gap between her front teeth and was sobbing into Vanessa's dirty cream dress.Lillian stood at the bottom of the steps, her bag with the second letter still slung across her body, her hands raised slightly, not in surrender, but in the universal nursing gesture: I am not a threat. Let me help."Patricia, put the gun down," Lillian said quietly, the way she talked to agitated patients. "That little girl has nothing to do with this.""Everything has to do with this!" Patricia screamed, the gun wavering between Lillian and Vanessa. "You were supposed to sign! You were supposed to take the money and le

Catherine Brooks was waiting in William's study, the same study where Lillian's tea and threatened herShe held a small, cream envelope, identical to the first two, but with a single initial on the front: L."I was supposed to give this to you only if you did what you just did," Catherine said, her eyes red from crying, but proud. "William told me, 'If Lillian protects Nathaniel after she learns the truth, she is the daughter I always wanted. Give her this.'"Lillian took it with shaking hands. Nathaniel stood by the fireplace, giving her space, his hands in his pockets.Inside was not a letter. It was a deed.Deed of Transfer: 50% Controlling Shares of Brooks Group of Companies, and Full Ownership of Brooks Foundation, including Global Care Alliance, to Lillian Harper, effective immediately, irrevocable, regardless of divorce status. And underneath, in William's shaky handwriting:You passed, Lillian. You chose compassion over power when you had every reason not to. My son is safe wi
