The plan was, by objective assessment, reckless. Kai knew this. He had assessed it rationally and arrived at the conclusion reckless and then agreed to it anyway, which was its own kind of data point about the state he was in. Jia had appeared in his doorway at eleven at night, which was not an unusual hour for her to appear in unusual places, wearing dark clothing and the expression she wore when she had already made a decision and was coming to inform him of it rather than discuss it. "Kevin's father filed the heirloom complaint through his lawyer this afternoon," she said. "He's going to make an example of someone. He always does." She paused. "I know where it lives. The heirloom. What he values above everything else. A watch — silver, his grandfather's, he uses it as leverage because it has documented provenance and he can claim anything about its location."Kai looked at her. "You want to steal it." "I want to move it," she said, with the precision of someone

The library’s upper levels were preserved in a perpetual, dust-mote-heavy twilight, even during the brightest hours of the midday sun. Kai walked the narrow iron catwalks of the fourth floor, his fingers occasionally brushing the spines of leather-bound legal texts and institutional records that had not been opened in thirty years. The air here was thicker, tasting faintly of vinegar, dried glue, and the slow, chemical decay of cheap paper from the turn of the century. Below, the main reading room was a distant hum of hushed whispers and the rhythmic, percussive clack of laptop keyboards, but up here, tucked behind the massive oak structural pillars, the world felt insulated, frozen, and remarkably fragile. He found Vicky exactly where he expected her to be: tucked into the deep, recessed alcove of the north study wing, surrounded by three separate stacks of reference materials and a scattering of handwritten index cards. She didn't look up when his shadow crossed her desk.

The morning after the storm arrived without a sunrise. Instead, the sky merely shifted from a heavy, impenetrable black to a uniform, leaden grey that seemed to hover just above the frosted chimney pots of the old city. The three inches of snow that had fallen during the night had been packed down by the early morning delivery wagons, turning the narrow lane outside the apartment into a slick, treacherous sheet of grey ice. The cold was different now; it had lost its wind-driven aggression and settled into a stagnant, metallic ache that crept through the gaps in the window frames and laid a thin, crystalline glaze along the inside of the glass. Kai stood by the small iron stove in the kitchen, his palms pressed flat against the zinc counter. The metal was freezing, drawing the residual heat from his skin until his fingertips went numb and white, but he didn't pull away. He needed the physical sting to anchor himself against the heavy, rhythmic throb behind his temples—a dull

The grey dark did not fall from the sky so much as it rose from the frozen stones of the street, bleeding out of the narrow gaps between the masonry until the lower foundations of the city were completely swallowed by shadow. Kai walked back toward the north ward lane, his legs moving with a heavy, mechanical regularity that felt entirely detached from his own volition. The soles of his boots were slick with the grey rime he had picked up in the park, causing his footing to slip slightly on every third or fourth stride, but he didn't adjust his balance. He simply allowed the jars of the impact to travel straight up his spine, a sequence of dull, physical shocks that matched the rhythmic clank of the shunting trains still echoing from the marshaling yard down by the frozen canal. The lane was completely silent when he turned the corner past the old cooperage. The single gas lamp that lit the narrow alley had not been serviced; its iron housing was clogged with dead frost, the

The border station at the dawn hour was not a place of arrivals so much as it was a final collection point for the refuse of the interior. Named Low-Gallows Siding on the official rail-maps, though the local timber-men simply called it the Black-Weir, it consisted of a single gravel platform that had been built over a salt-marsh, its low timber structures supported by creosote-soaked piles that groaned rhythmically every time the tide pushed the grey sludge of the river against the bank. The air here was entirely free of the city’s sweet coal-gas and the university’s dry floor-wax; it was vast, cold, and bitter, carrying the heavy smell of rotting bladderwrack, wet willow-bark, and the sharp, chemical brine of the coastal salt-pans two miles to the west. The mineral train came to a halt with a violent, cascading series of iron jolts that travelled down the lengths of the slack-couplings like a sequence of rifle shots. The brake-van door did not slide easily; its iron rollers were
