THE TWIN IN HIS BED

CHAPTER ELEVEN The city drifted past the tinted windows of Carlton's car in streaks of white and gold, lights dissolved into long ribbons against the evening traffic. Across from us, our driver sat ramrod straight, his attention fixed on the road ahead.Beside me, Carlton seemed perfectly at ease.As though the afternoon had been nothing more than another business appointment.I stole a glance at him.His tie was gone. The first two buttons of his shirt had been left undone, softening the severe image he usually carried. One arm rested lazily along the back of the seat behind me, close enough for me to feel its warmth without actually touching me.I shifted.A dull ache reminded me exactly why that had been a terrible idea.Heat climbed stubbornly up my neck.God.What was wrong with me?I pressed my thighs together, hoping to silence the lingering ache between them.It didn't help. How did I move from being exposed to seducing and sleeping with my sister's husband for the third time

CHAPTER TWELVE Carlton's mother is here? What did I do to deserve this amount of karma? Why would Arla's mother-in-law visit today of all days?"What do you mean Carlton's mother is here?"Mrs Timothy smoothed invisible creases in front of her dress.Very odd."She arrived just a few minutes after you left the house. There was no way we could have known she was coming," she said.God, what am I going to do now?ARLA!I hope you come down with something terrible enough to ruin your trip.Carlton wasn't even home.Blast that caller's timing! Now, I was all alone. How do I face someone that's got even the stern, overly composed Mrs Timothy fidgeting?"It's best we do not keep her waiting, you know she's got … a temper," Mrs Timothy said.I know?I knew nothing!Every instinct screamed at me to run. That was the best approach at this point.I've barely pulled off tricking the whole staff into believing I was my cold, composed and calculative sister. How do I intend to do it with someone

CHAPTER THIRTEEN I was living proof that miracles existed.Carlton's mother had successfully sucked up every ounce of oxygen from the mansion, yet I was still breathing. The moment I got upstairs, I had dialled Arla over and over again. Yet, the automated response persisted. The number you're trying to call…I was in trouble.Dinner with Carlton and the woman who raised him spelt my end. There was no way I wouldn't be caught once I joined that table. Once again, I contemplated running away.Arla could deal with her mess. However, my feet refused to make it past the bedroom door. Thoughts of what would happen to my mother if I ran away held me bound.A sister who was willing to use her mother to blackmail her own sister couldn't care less about a mother she'd abandoned for eleven years when it came to saving her own skin.I sat holed up in Arla's bedroom, praying that time slowed. Thoughts of reading a good book in the library over some biscuits and drinks were now farfetched.Time, ap

CHAPTER FOURTEEN I woke up to the faint sound of running water. The room was dark, lit only by the soft wash of moonlight spilling through the floor-to-ceiling windows. For a few seconds, I simply lay there, listening. The quiet hum of the air conditioner. The faint trickle of water from the gardens below. The deep, almost unsettling silence of the estate.I closed my eyes again.Dinner replayed itself with merciless clarity. The Dowager's eyes. Her questions. Her impossible composure. The correspondence bluff. Then the annual family dinner.I pulled the duvet higher. If tonight had taught me anything, it was that Carlton wasn't the greatest threat to this ridiculous charade. His mother was.The running water stopped.A moment later, the bathroom door opened. Steam drifted into the bedroom, and light spilled across the polished wooden floor in a large strip.Light footsteps treaded the room. Carlton.Apparently, I'd developed a sixth sense for Carlton Holland's footsteps somewhere

CHAPTER FIFTEEN Two days. That was all the time the Dowager had given me to fit in the original Arla Holland mold. And I spent the most of it memorising the Hollands, and donor names off a seating chart Mrs Timothy had helped me curate. And when I wasn't trying to be Arla, I enjoyed the luxury of one of the largest in-house library I'd ever seen. One of the staff had done the favour of prattling about the gala gossip, who did what and who didn't. Unfortunately, she didn't know about the beef between the Ashcroft and Whitefields. Now, I was about to find out.The Holland estate made the mansion look modest. The moment Carlton's car slid through the wrought-iron gates, I knew I had imagined it all wrong. Wealth. Luxury. Influence. A family home. The driveway curved through acres of manicured gardens where marble statues stood beneath ancient oaks, their branches casting restless shadows across perfectly trimmed hedges. Beyond them, fountains glittered beneath the fading evenin

CHAPTER SIXTEENMy mind raced as we crossed the room. What is this about Community projects and Scholarship picks? “He’s got a name he'd like you to consider," Carlton said. Before I could ask him what he meant, he led me into a semicircle of three men, drink in each hand. "Gentlemen." Carlton's hand found the small of my back, steady. "My wife." One man turned first and, unlike most of the room so far, actually looked at me instead of past me."Arla. Good thing Carlton finally brought you over. I've got a young man I'd like the committee to take a proper look at.”Apparently, this was Felix Whitmore.“East side program,” he continued. “First in his family headed anywhere near university. I'll have the file sent to the house."The committee.I had no committee. I had no idea of what "a proper look" was supposed to mean specifically, except that apparently some kid's future now ran through whatever decision I was meant to make."Send it over," I said, careful, even. "I'll make sure

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN I shouldn't have said that.It followed me out of the study and back into the noise of the party . It sat in my chest like something I'd swallowed and hadn't figured out how to breathe around yet."I hope you don't intend to rejoin the party wearing that expression."The Dowager's voice stopped me before I found a hiding place."Tell me," she drawled, coming into my view. "Was it you who upset my son, or the other way around?"A trick question if I'd ever heard one.It had just dawned on me that this woman knew her son had been seeing someone else, had gotten that someone pregnant, and had decided it was best to taunt me with questions on pregnancy and heirs. What else did she know?"Neither," I said. "We're fine.""Mm."She clearly didn't believe me, and didn't bother pretending otherwise. Her gaze moved once, briefly, toward the corridor I'd been heading for, then came back to me."I've never been able to deny that boy anything," she said, lightly, almost idly, th

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN By the second morning, I was certain Carlton wasn't coming home for the rest of the week. I told myself it meant nothing. Men like him had late-night meetings, phantom emergencies, entire wings of a house they could vanish into without technically leaving. I told myself other things too, over the last two nights, that some distance might do us both good, that I didn't actually want to know what "you misunderstood what you heard" was supposed to mean when he finally deigned to explain it. None of it stopped me checking my phone every time it buzzed, or finding out, every time, that it wasn't him. Twice I almost asked Mrs Timothy a question I had no business asking. Both times I caught myself with the words halfway out. Was there a woman Carlton had cherished so much?

CHAPTER NINETEEN At precisely eight that evening, the sound of a car engine rolled through the estate. I rushed to the bedroom window overlooking the front driveway, just in time to see Carlton step out from the passenger's end. I inhaled sharply. He was here! Then as though summoned, he looked up, directly to the bedroom window where I stood. My heart skipped a bit. Even from a distance, I could feel the intensity of his stare. A knock pulled me away from his mesmerising gaze. I turned as Mrs Timothy opened the bedroom door. “Mr Holland is here.” I know. I nodded, smoothing nervous hands over the red silk as my stomach continued to twi

CHAPTER TWENTY Bodies. Unclad bodies were everywhere. A woman straddled a man by the fireplace, rocking her hips back and forth, while another woman kissed the line of her throat slowly. Beside them, two men kissed each other passionately, one had the other man's dick in his hands, stroking and squeezing, while a woman knelt between his legs, sucking his dick. Desire hung in the air like perfume; unashamed, unhinged, uninterrupted, intoxicating. My instinct was to bolt. But, as though Carlton knew, his hands settled on my lower back firmly. I nearly jumped as his skin touched mine. “Breathe,” he breathed against my ear, and boy, I almost lost consciousness. My throat worked painfully as I swallowed hard. “What…what is this place?”His fingers flexed subtly on my waist as we took another turn. “A private sex club.”Isn't that just comforting? Did he take Arla to places of this nature? Arla. What kind of marriage did she really have with Carlton?I guess the kind where he c
