Nobody knew. That was the thing Theo had managed most carefully, over the longest period of time, with the most consistent success. Not Julian. Not Edmund. Not the wedding planner or the family solicitor or any of the people who had moved through the eight months of the Ashford-Calloway engagement like stage crew behind a well-rehearsed production. Not even Charlotte, until she did and the night she told him, sitting in a coffee shop in Marylebone in February with her coat still on and her hands wrapped around a cup she wasn't drinking, had been one of the three or four nights in Theo Calloway's life he was fairly certain had changed the shape of things permanently. He had been in love with Charlotte Ashford for approximately two years before she became his brother's fiancée.He had met her at a gallery opening ,not the kind that required a buzzer and showed things under discreet lighting, but a larger, noisier affair with wine served in plastic glasses and too many people standing in

He texted at eight in the morning.Where would you actually want to go. If no one was watching and nothing needed to happen, just to unwind and maybe I just want to see you.Sophie read it lying in bed, still warm from sleep, and smiled before she was fully awake. She typed back: There's a market on Columbia Road on Sunday mornings. I've been going alone for years.Three dots. Then: I'll pick you up at seven. The market doesn't open until eight.I know. I'll pick you up at seven. She put the phone down and looked at the ceiling and felt, very quietly, like someone who was being taken care of in a way she had not yet learned to receive without being slightly overwhelmed by it.---He was outside at seven on the dot, which she had expected, with two coffees from a place that had clearly been open since before dawn, which she had also begun to expect. The morning was cold and clear, the particular sharp-edged brightness of an autumn Sunday in London, the streets still half-asleep and ent

Seven days. Julian learned the shape of the hospital the way he had learned every other environment he'd ever spent significant time in — with the particular precision of someone who managed unfamiliar things by understanding them completely. He knew which nurse came on at six in the morning and which one preferred not to be spoken to before seven. He knew that the coffee from the machine on the third floor was better than the one on the second. He knew the sound of Sophie's monitors so well that he would have noticed any change before the alarm had time to form an opinion about it. He went home twice — once to sleep properly, on Theo's insistence, and once to collect things he needed. He brought his laptop and worked from the chair beside her bed, because the company didn't stop requiring his attention simply because his entire interior life had been suspended, and because it gave him something to do with his hands that wasn't simply sitting and holding the specific anguish of a w

He didn't tell her everything at once. That was the first decision he made, standing in the corridor outside her room while Margaret sat with her and the doctor explained the plan going forward — rest, monitoring, gradual reintroduction of stimulation, no pressure on memory recovery because pressure rarely helped and occasionally made things worse. Julian stood with his back against the wall and his arms folded and made the decision with the same clarity he brought to everything that mattered: he was not going to walk back into that room and lay two months of history on a woman who had woken up an hour ago not knowing his face. She had enough to carry. She always had. He was not going to add to it.Theo appeared at the end of the corridor, having apparently developed an instinct for the moments Julian most needed him. He looked at his brother's face and said nothing, which was correct."She doesn't remember me," Julian said."I know. Margaret called.""She looked at me like—" Julian s

The doctor came on a Thursday morning.Julian was already in the chair when she arrived, which he suspected she had counted on had timed it for the hour she knew he came, because she was precise and kind in the way that the best doctors were, managing the human architecture of difficult things alongside the medical ones. She knocked, came in, and looked at them both with the expression of someone who had carried the weight of what she was about to say through three days of morning rounds and was now, finally, ready to set it down."Sophie," she said. "I need to talk to you about something the blood work showed when you came in."Sophie set down the book she'd been reading one of Theo's, which he'd replaced with a new one every few days, which was a kindness Julian had noted and not commented on. She looked at the doctor with the steady, careful attention she gave most things. "All right.""During your admission we ran a standard full panel of tests." The doctor moved to the other side
