Dawn found me standing at the edge of Kade territory, staring at something I still didn’t have words for.Dozens of wolves stood beyond the tree line, travel-worn, unarmed, and the moment they saw me, every single one of them knelt.“That’s not two or three,” Asher said quietly beside me. “That’s dozens, Briar.”“I know.”“You called them.”“I didn’t know it would be like this.”“How could you have known? None of us have ever seen anything like this.”Wren stood on my other side, gripping my arm. “What do we do? Do we let them in? Do we send them away? Somebody has to say something.”“I don’t have a framework for this,” I admitted. “Nobody prepared me for an army kneeling at a border.”“Nobody could have,” Asher said. “This has never happened before. Not in living memory.”“Is it even safe,” Wren asked. “What if it’s a trick? What if Ysolde arranged this somehow?”“I don’t think Ysolde has the reach to arrange forty people kneeling in perfect unison,” Asher said. “Whatever this is, it

The council chamber was already loud by the time I walked in, voices overlapping before anyone had officially opened the session.“Forty-three mouths to feed,” an older Kade elder said, arms crossed. “Overnight. Nobody consulted this council before that number showed up at our gate.”“Nobody could consult anyone,” Asher said. “It happened in real time. We adapt or we turn people away who came here peacefully.”“Peacefully" is one word for it. Some of us are calling it an invasion with better manners.”“That’s not fair,” I said, stepping fully into the room. “They knelt. They asked for nothing beyond shelter.”“They knelt to you, Miss Hale. Not to this pack. I’d like someone to explain what that means for the rest of us before we hand over housing and rations.”“It means exactly what it looks like. They answered a call. They’re not here to take anything from Kade pack.”“Convenient, coming from the one they knelt to.”“What would you prefer, that I turn them away and let them scatter w

Callum spread the new reports across the table beside the old requisition logs, candlelight flickering over both.“Alder territory,” he said. “Two assassination attempts on council members in the last month. Both unclaimed.”“Unclaimed doesn’t mean unconnected.”“That’s what I thought too. Look at the method.”I leaned over the report, scanning the description. “Quiet. Precise. No struggle.”“Same signature as the sentry we lost at Kade territory. Same signature as half a dozen incidents I’ve now found scattered across three other territories, going back further than I expected.”“How far back does this go, exactly?”“That’s the part that unsettled me enough to bring it straight to you instead of digging further alone.”“How much further?”“Years, Ronan. Not weeks. Not months tied neatly to whatever’s happening with Briar right now. Years.”Something cold settled low in my stomach.“You’re certain of the dates.”“As certain as old records let me be. I cross-referenced three separate s

“He won’t talk,” the guard said, meeting me outside the holding cell. “Not to any of us. He asked for you by name.”“Me specifically.”“Said he’d only speak to Briar Hale. Nobody else.”“How is he? Physically.”“Stable, for now. The healer patched what she could. He’s still weak.”I exchanged a glance with Asher, who nodded once, tight and reluctant.“I’ll be right outside,” he said. “One word and I’m through that door.”“I know.”“I don’t like this.”“Neither do I. I still need to hear whatever he’s willing to say.”The cell was small, bare stone, a single lantern casting long shadows across the assassin’s bound and bloodied form. He looked up when I entered, something unreadable behind his eyes.“You came,” he said.“You asked for me. Here I am.”“I wasn’t sure you would.”“I want answers. That’s worth showing up for.”“Most people in your position would have sent someone else. Keep their distance.”“I’m not most people. You’ve probably noticed that by now.”He studied me for a long

“Not for a long time,” I repeated. “How long is not a long time, Mother. Give me actual years.”“Since before you were born.”The words landed heavier than I expected, settling into the room like something physical.“Before I was born. That means every decision I thought was yours, every consequence I’ve spent my whole life absorbing as your choices, wasn’t fully yours at all.”“Some of it was mine. I want to be clear about that. I made choices within the space I was given. I didn’t have as much space as either of us assumed.”“That’s a careful way to describe losing control of your own pack.”“It’s the honest way. I’ve stopped having the energy to phrase things carefully tonight.”“Start from the beginning. All of it. I’m done accepting fragments.”She took a slow breath, gathering herself in a way I’d never once seen her need to before tonight.“The oath,” she said. “The alliance with Voss. The silence clause. All of it traces back to a threat I’ve been managing since before you wer
