The terrace was quieter than the ballroom by a wide, grateful margin. Raine stood at the stone balustrade with both hands resting lightly on the cool surface, shoulders finally beginning to loosen after the pressure of the evening. Behind him, muted through the tall glass doors, the welcome party continued in a wash of music and controlled conversation. Out here the night air moved freely. Lanterns marked the garden paths below in soft intervals of gold. Beyond the palace walls the capital spread in a darker, more ordinary scatter of light. He drew a slow breath and let it out through his nose, trying to bleed off the residual heat of the confrontation with the woman in red and the heavier, colder awareness of the queen’s eyes on him and Nathan. He did not hear the footsteps until they were already too close. There was a brief, sharp pressure at the side of his neck, a sting, precise and professional, and then heat flooded outward from the point of contact with frightening speed. R
