[Emily]Elias's expression changed. The cold, controlled mask I'd seen him wear a thousand times shattered into something terrifying: pure and primal fury."What the hell are you doing here?" Elias's asked Axel, his voice low and deadly calm. The kind of calm that hid a bigger emotion, one that promised violence if one didn't tread carefully.Axel gave Elias a smug smile. Wrong move! "I should be asking you that, Lockwood. I'm just here to see my girlfriend."I snapped my head sharply to look at him. "I'm not your girlfriend!""Shut up, whore. Do you think you can play with my feelings?" Axel shouted back, the veins on his neck almost popping out. He advanced towards me, as if to continue what he didn't finish. But Elias beat him to it. He moved so fast I barely saw it. One moment he was in the hallway, the next his fist connected with Axel's face with a sickening crack."Ouch, you broke my fucking nose." Axel staggered backwards, clutching his face before crumbling to the ground in p

[Lucent Volkov]The elevator ride to the forty-second floor took exactly forty-seven seconds. I counted every one of them, my reflection staring back at me from the polished steel doors; dark hair cut short for the first time in years, clean-shaven, wearing a suit I'd spent more than I cared to admit. I looked like him now. My blonde dyed hair was gone now, packed away in the dustbin of a hair salon two days ago. I'd stared at myself in the mirror after, and it felt like seeing an exact copy of my brother.Or maybe a ghost. Maybe I'd always been the ghost. A ghost of my brother, the man the whole world knew of while I was the one kept in the shadows. The one forgotten and erased from a legacy I should be part of.The doors slid open onto a marble hallway, and abstract pieces of art filled the walls. It was the kind of wealth that didn't announce itself so much as assume you already knew. There was a receptionist or a secretary; I wasn't sure. She was polished, pretty and looked profes

[Emily]The next Friday arrived wrapped in golden October sunshine, the kind of day that made New Orleans feel like a painting come to life. Elias had postponed his trip, and so he was arriving seven days later. I woke up this morning before my alarm, my heart already racing with anticipation, my mind rehearsing the words I'd been waiting six years to say."Elias, Hayden is your son."I'd practised it in the mirror a dozen times. Also, in the shower, while chopping vegetables for dinner the night before. And each time, my reflection smiled back at me, nervous, hopeful and ready. The DNA results sat in my nightstand drawer, the paper slightly crumpled from how many times I'd folded and unfolded it.99.9997% probability. The numbers didn't lie. Elias Lockwood was Hayden's father. I'd spent all these years running from the wrong man, and it was time to make everything right again.I called Elias early that morning to confirm whether he was still coming. The phone rang four times before h

[Elias]We left Russia three days later. I badly wanted to fly to New Orleans the next day to see Emily, but Lucent wanted to meet our father and claim what was 'his'. That's the only thing he could talk about on the flight back to New York. Through this short time I'd spent with him, I'd realised how different we were. We were two brothers with the same DNA but strangers at heart. He looked like the wild type, and the scar beside his eye, pale against his skin, was enough proof.Harrison Lockwood, who was surprisingly in town and not gallivanting somewhere, took the news of his second son's arrival with surprising calm, considering that he'd never met him before today; he acted as though they were best pals. He hugged and kissed him on the cheek several times. We moved to Dad's study, the same study where I'd signed my first business contract."I see," Harrison said, studying Lucent across his mahogany desk. "You have my eyes just like Elias.""We do. Though I think having our mother

[Emily]The sound of my slap echoed through the kitchen like a gunshot. I wasn't a violent person and had never even laid hands on a fly before, but at that moment, I wished it were really a gun in my hand and that he'd drop to the ground and somehow disappear from my presence.Lucent's head snapped to the side, and when he turned back to me, his blue eyes were dark, calculating and cold. So cold that I wanted to land another slap on his other cheek. How dare he call me that word? A whore? For what. Just because I had a one-night stand with him, people did that all the time, and I didn't see others walking around calling them whores.I looked at him with disdain. He stood there rigid, his hands clenched at both sides and his chest rising and falling. Like he was trying to stop himself from hitting me back; honestly, he only looked like someone suffering from constipation."You've got fire," he said, touching his cheek where my handprint was already blooming red. "I remember that too.
