All Chapters of The Alpha Between Us: Chapter 31 - Chapter 40

Chapter 32Kai’s voice flowed as smoothly as a stream beneath the stars of a night sky, outwardly undisturbed. The fluidity carried the aura of a mist-laden forest, fluttering like hushed whispers in my ears.“I never wanted to say I love you, because to say it means to define it. The love I have for you is more than anything words can define, where definition means limitation.”If this had been any other situation, I would have been laughing my ass off at his choice of words.“But since you wanted me to say it, there, I’ve thrown it at you, Alexia. I love you.”“Did you read that from a poem?” I asked, the urge to break character so strong I could barely restrain myself.“It was that easy to catch me?” He chuckled, grabbing his stomach in deep laughter. “Yes, but I did a little paraphrasing to make it mine.”“That was cringe as hell,” I replied.I sat on the bed and Kai followed suit. My elbows rested on my thighs while I stared at the wardrobe as though it held answers to everything

Chapter 34The study was just as magnificent, and Kai was at the end of it, nose deep in work.“Hello,” I muttered once I’d recovered from my shock.“Yo, sweet peach.” Kai blinked up at me. A visible shock lingered for a split second. He must not have expected to see me.It prompted me to say, “I asked Butler Hector. He guided me here.”“Truly, I don’t mind,” he replied, wearing that ghost of a smile again. He really knew what he was doing, squinting his eyes and giving himself the effect of a nasty, mischievous man.A lot of floor-to-ceiling windows stretched across the tall space, the ceiling higher than anything I’d ever seen, and the room was divided into two sections. The first was where Kai worked. Exquisite, by the way.The second section was what gripped my attention. A huge telescope was placed close to one of the windows, directed toward the stars. Moonbeams from the night blurred into the room, blending with the warm LED lights designed into the walls and the corner lights

Chapter 36The air around me was awkward. It felt as though Clawface ignored me entirely. It made me wish for Kai to finish whatever he was doing inside and come to my rescue. But for how long was he supposed to save me every time discomfort arose? After a while longer, I summoned the courage to lean forward, my elbows firm against the wooden table separating us, and spoke out.“Hi. You’re Clawface, yes?” My voice came out high-pitched, and so I steadied myself. “I’m Alexia.”“I’m aware,” he replied curtly, making me want to recoil back into my shell and never speak to him again. Or even meet his eyes. However, for some reason, I pushed forward.“I’m actually Kai’s friend, and you’re close to him,” I started again, yet he still wouldn’t look my way. “Uh, you protected me during the menace caused by MoonBlade.”Seconds passed and he didn’t say anything, allowing the breeze to howl around us.“I plan to get some tea. Should I get you more coffee?” I looked up from his nearly empty cup t

Chapter 38Thick black smoke basked beneath the dark clouds, masking the scent of agony in the air.I heard their voices, and I quivered in my unsteady stance.“Save us, Alexia.”“Alexia!”Their screams revealed the horror of the night, carried by the sound of crackling fire and rattling metal bending beneath the heat. Then, the euphoria came.I almost felt it. Almost tasted it.The One Tree’s residence.“Aetherblood…” Its voice trailed off.It called to me.Not once, yet it echoed from a distance I couldn’t locate. The vision I found myself in was torn, split between horror and peace. Then reality sank back in. I expected to fall, to crash against the rocky ground, but something caught my arm when I had almost given up hope.Forcing my eyes open and blinking upward, I realized it was Kai. Shock was practically etched into him, evident in the way it sparkled through his expression as he held his breath. He pulled me back onto the attic swiftly, his eyes inspecting me at arm’s length.

Chapter 40Though the plan was working, my heart sank at the truth of it. I felt as though I’d committed a gruesome offense that required cleansing through seeking Kai’s forgiveness, but in truth, I believed this was for the betterment of us both.Piles of clothes lay sprawled across the bed, and I picked through each of them, arranging them carefully into a bag that could be carried easily.Having dressed myself in a light linen white shirt and short cargo pants that stopped above my knees, I slipped on a pair of transparent glasses with golden frames. I checked myself one final time in the mirror before making my way toward the exit of the penthouse.“Master Alexia, what are you doing?” Butler Hector asked, and I paused before turning to the left where he’d seemingly appeared out of nowhere.“As you can see, Butler Hector, I’m leaving.”“But… but Master Kai was just…” The poor man sounded strained. I almost pitied him enough to stay beside him, but I knew the sacrifice that had to b
