The first thing Caelian registered was softness. Not the thin, crackling mattress of the forest woman’s house. Not the cold dirt and roots where he had collapsed more than once. This was deep, yielding, and clean, the kind of softness that belonged to wealth and safety. He groaned as awareness returned in slow, reluctant waves. His eyes fluttered open and met a ceiling so pale it was nearly white, smooth and unmarked, lit by a gentle glow that did not seem to come from any candle or window he could see.
