Two days had passed since Elara cried in front of Mara. Two days, and yet it felt both impossibly distant and unbearably close—like a memory that had already faded, and at the same time, like something raw and alive, still warm and tender beneath her skin.Elara hadn’t meant for it to happen. She had always been careful.Careful with her words.Careful with her expressions.Careful with how much of herself she let anyone see, even in moments of trust. But grief had a way of slipping past every measure, undoing even the most practiced restraint, leaving her exposed in ways she hadn’t anticipated.Since that afternoon, she had avoided Mara as much as politeness would allow. Not out of anger, or resentment—but out of a quiet, gnawing embarrassment, a heaviness that settled in her chest every time she remembered how completely her composure had crumbled. She had cried. In front of a stranger.A woman who was, technically, an employee in her home.Someone with no obligation to witness her u

As they reached the car, Mara stepped ahead and opened the rear door.“Are you all right?” she asked quietly, once Vivienne was out of earshot.Elara hesitated. Then nodded. “Yes.”It wasn’t the truth. But it was the safest answer.Mara studied her for a fraction of a second longer—long enough to register the lie without calling it out—then inclined her head and stepped back. The door closed softly behind Elara, sealing her inside the hushed interior of the car.As it pulled away from the curb, Elara leaned back against the leather seat and closed her eyes. She had wanted to say something. The words had risen in her chest almost immediately, tight and insistent, lodging in her throat. But the moment had passed as quickly as it had come, smothered by caution. She didn’t know where to begin. And more importantly—she didn’t know who might be listening. The driver’s presence was quiet but absolute. He had been with them long enough that Elara no longer knew whether he was simply doing his

Elara woke slowly, the way one does after a night that had taken something heavy away. For a brief, suspended moment, she didn’t move. She lay still beneath the sheets, her breathing even, her body unusually relaxed. The early morning light filtered through the sheer curtains, soft and pale, brushing the room in muted gold. It felt peaceful—so peaceful it startled her.She couldn’t remember the last time she’d woken like this. Then memory stirred. Not sharply. Not painfully.Gently.Mara.The realization settled over her chest like a warm hand. Elara closed her eyes again, and the night before replayed itself with an intimacy that made her breath hitch. She remembered how it had felt to be seen—truly seen. Not as Adrian’s wife. Not as Noah’s guardian. Not as something fragile that needed managing. Just… Elara. She could still feel it, as though her skin had memorized the contact. The steady pressure of Mara’s arms around her. The quiet strength in her hold. The way her touch had never

Elara was already aware that Adrian would be in the bedroom any minute now.She lay on her side with her back to the door, eyes open in the dark, waiting. The room was soundproof, sealed off from the rest of the penthouse, but she didn’t need noise to know. She had learned his timing over the years—the way he moved through the house, the length of his routines, the certainty with which he always arrived. Even without hearing him, she could feel the approach. The bedroom door opened and closed. He crossed the room. She registered the small, deliberate sounds he made as he settled in. The watch placed on the dresser. The faint metallic touch, controlled and precise. Then the low murmur of his voice as he answered a message, followed by the soft click of his phone being set face down.He went into the bathroom.Light spilled briefly beneath the door. Water ran in the sink. She heard him rinse his mouth, spit, adjust the temperature. A moment la

Elara waited. She retreated upstairs first, closing herself into the safety of her room until the house resumed its rhythm—footsteps fading, voices dispersing, attention shifting elsewhere other than keep track of her movement. When she finally stepped back out into the corridor, her movements were deliberate, calm. She stopped in front of Mara’s bedroom door, her pulse loud in her ears. She lifted her hand and knocked once—soft, controlled. A sound meant for only one person. The door opened almost immediately.Mara barely had time to take in Elara’s face—the tightness around her eyes, the breath she seemed to be holding—before Elara stepped forward. She crossed the threshold without hesitation, fingers already reaching back to pull the door closed behind her. It shut with a muted click, more urgent than careful. The silence that followed was thick. For half a heartbeat, Elara stood there, as if unsure her legs would hold her. Then whatever restraint she had been carrying finally gave
