ELARABy the time Rhys returned, Briar Hollow had begun settling into the slower rhythm of evening. The musicians were still playing, but the lively dancing had reduced, children were now leaning sleepily against their parents, and several villagers were already carrying empty baskets and folded clothes back toward their homes.I was speaking to one of the women who had spent half the afternoon trying to convince me that her bread deserved its own festival category when I noticed Rhys approaching from the western side of the village. Two guards followed him.He didn't look alarmed, which was the first thing I noticed and the second thing I noticed was that his hands were empty.“You didn't find him,” I said when he reached me.“No. We searched the entrance and followed the road a short distance, but we couldn't track anything reliably, and no one we spoke to had seen where the man went.”I nodded. That was disappointing, but not unexpected.“What did you find?”Rhys glanced down at hi

ELARA Several days passed after my last visit with Elias and I got carried away by so many other things, it was work related though. The investigation for the missing workers was still going though. I realized I always looked toward the entrance whenever the door opened at any slightest chance I got. It happened in the middle of an ordinary morning at the district office, while two village representatives were standing in front of my desk discussing a dispute over irrigation water.Neither of them had anything particularly interesting to say.One believed the other had diverted more water toward his fields than their agreement allowed. The other insisted the problem had been caused by a damaged channel farther upstream and maintained that he had used no more than his share.I had nearly spent twenty minutes comparing the dates of their harvest records when the door opened behind them.My eyes lifted automatically and then I stopped. It wasn't Kieran like my mind had expected. I

RONANThe quartermaster's records room smelled of dust, old leather, and the faint oil used to preserve military equipment.I had been there long enough for the clerk at the far desk to stop pretending not to watch me. I turned to another page but I still couldn't see what I was looking for. Weeks had passed since I had first heard about the Moonblade military insignia discovered in an abandoned cabin in Aveloria's northern forest. The physical metal box that was found too had already been examined from every angle that mattered. The insignia was genuine and the style belonged to Moonblade's military. Boxes of that kind had been used in the field for dispatches, small documents, personal command materials, and supplies. There was simply no record identifying that particular box.I had accepted that part. What I had not accepted was the question that came after it.I was no longer trying to determine whether the box belonged to Moonblade, I knew it did.I just wanted to know how i

ELARA It's been days since I got a message from Kieran and since I sent my reply to him. I've been busy handling only very mild issues and following up the investigation on the missing person and tracing who was behind the forged royal authorization. I was currently at a meeting about a drainage channel and genuinely enjoying the argument.I had another issue to resolve. The farmers from two neighboring villages had been disputing access to the same stretch of water for nearly an hour. One insisted the other had widened his side of the channel during the last planting season while the other claimed the first farmer had been diverting more water than his share for years.Mara had already produced three records, two old maps, and one report written by a district officer who had apparently believed that using the phrase ‘reasonable allocation’ meant he had solved the matter. He had not.I rubbed my forehead."If you both agree that the channel is too narrow for the amount of water y
