Lahat ng Kabanata ng Why I Called the Police: Kabanata 1 - Kabanata 10

“What about the children’s details, such as what city they live in, where they work, and how much they make a month? Do you need all that too?” I probed. The lady's smile froze for a moment, but she recovered quickly. “Oh, that part is totally optional. It's just that some seniors have kids living out of state, so we like to keep tabs to offer extra support if they need it. Don't worry about it. You can just fill out the basics for now. No rush.”I scribbled down a fake name and a bogus cell number, thanked her, and headed home clutching the free pack of pasta they'd given out. That night, I took the photos I'd snapped during the day, organized my notes into a list of red flags, and typed up a massive text to the family group chat.[Chloe, Leo, take a look at this. I checked out the Caring Hearts Center today and found some major red flags. I think you guys should warn anyone you know who has elderly parents. Tell them not to sign up.]I hit send and waited.Ten minutes crawled b

I kept my answers vague. Joe didn’t push for details. He just nodded, noted them down, and started checking my blood pressure.Once he finished, he furrowed his brows.“Mrs. Parker, your systolic is 142 and your diastolic is 96 today. That is getting dangerously high. Do you know what numbers like that mean for a senior living alone?” He slowed his speech down, delivering every single word like a heavy blow, “You are home by yourself. Say you bend down to tie your shoelaces, and then you stand up too fast. Your blood pressure spikes. Your brain is deprived of oxygen, and boom, you collapse.”I scoffed inwardly. I checked my own blood pressure every single day. The readings were always perfectly normal. Why was it that the second these guys put a cuff on me, my health was suddenly in jeopardy?…I didn’t say a word. I just locked my eyes onto him.Joe leaned in, continuing, “Collapsing in the living room is one thing, but what if you pass out in the bathroom? What if you hit t

Arthur’s face went pale.He said to Joe, “Open it.”Joe hesitated for a second, then walked over and clicked the lock open. Two people stood in the doorway. One was a young rookie cop in a crisp blue uniform. The other was Frank.Frank was in plainclothes, but the gun clipped to his hip and the police badge on his chest said it all.His eyes scanned the room and landed straight on me. He looked me up and down, checking for injuries. Once he saw I was okay, he looked away."Who's in charge here?" the rookie cop asked, stepping forward.Arthur forced a smile back onto his face and rushed over. “That would be me, Officer. Is there a problem?”“We got a call about a disturbance.”Arthur played innocent. “A disturbance? Oh, no way. We're a legitimate business. These two ladies...” Then, he pointed at me and Brenda. “There was just a little misunderstanding. We were actually just sorting it out. You guys got here at the perfect time. Maybe you can help us mediate?”Frank comple

Frank opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but he just let out a heavy sigh instead. “Helen, you’re seriously putting me in a tough spot here.” “Just tell me yes or no.” Frank relented. “Fine. But you have to promise me, no confronting these people alone.”“I promise.” Bernice reached into her bag, pulled out an envelope, and slid it over to me. “Mrs. Parker, inside here is the contact info for the Financial Crimes Unit, along with my personal cell number. You can call me day or night. Also...” She reached into her bag again and produced a small, black device. It looked like a standard USB drive, only much flatter. “This is a covert voice recorder. One-touch activation, eight hours of battery life. Keep it on you. If you ever end up in another situation like the one with Arthur, you can use this to secure evidence.” I took it from her and examined it closely. “This gadget is lightyears ahead of the clunky gear I used back in my day.” “Times change,” Bernice said

“None of your damn business,” the man with the buzz cut spat back. Frank let out a cold, sharp laugh. “Fine. Take him away.” The man glared at me. “You wait, old lady. You’ll pay for this.” The officers shoved him out the front door. Frank turned back to look at me. “Helen, don’t let a word of what he said get to you.” “I’m not,” I said with a faint smile, “I’ve been hearing threats like that for decades.”… At eleven o'clock that night, Bernice sent me a text message. [Mrs. Parker, we got Evelyn. She was right at the address Joe gave us. She was literally packing her bags to flee to another hideout when we cornered her. I’ll keep you updated tomorrow. Get some rest.]The court sentences finally came down. Arthur got seven years and four months. As Joe cooperated and turned over the evidence, his sentence was reduced to two years. As for the criminal mastermind, Evelyn’s case was handled separately. The police were still actively hunting down the scammed funds. Tw
