A new community center had just been set up right next to the local store. On the first day, my daughter, Chloe Parker, came home clutching a free carton of eggs. On the second day, she brought home a bottle of olive oil and a bottle of balsamic vinegar. On the third day, arriving home and panting, she excitedly carried in a pack of pasta. I casually asked her, “Did you get that from work?” Chloe collapsed onto the couch, her chest heaving as she replied, “No, it's from that new community center down the street. They're giving away free groceries to anyone who signs up with their phone number and home address.” She casually continued, “I saw a massive line of seniors waiting out there, so I figured I'd grab some for you.” I frowned. “No legitimate charity or business demands your exact street address just for a basic promotional giveaway.” Chloe retorted impatiently, “Mom, you're retired. Can you please stop treating every single person you meet like a suspect?” My son, Leo Parker, chimed in and said, “Seriously, Mom. It's a five-pound pack of pasta. How much is it worth? What could they possibly want from you? Just don't go down there and make a massive scene. We literally cannot handle the embarrassment.” They didn't get it. They couldn't—because I’d spent my whole life as a detective. Every big scam always starts with a piece of free candy.

Chapter 1

How much was a five-pound pack of pasta actually worth?

If a thousand elderly folks claimed that single bag, then this community center would suddenly have a highly targeted database of a thousand senior citizens living alone, complete with their children's contact details.

That database was worth ten thousand times more than the pasta.

I said to my daughter, “Chloe, send me the official, registered name of that community center. I want to search online and see if they're actually registered.”

Chloe kept her eyes glued to her phone, scrolling as she muttered, “Mom, I already checked. They're registered, and they're totally legit. Can you please just drop it?”

Was I really just being paranoid?

Leo spoke up next, "Mom, we work hard all week and just arrived to visit you. Don't start causing trouble. The center seems great to me. They were even hand-delivering fans and shared tips on how seniors can prevent falls. They're just trying to do some good.”

However, the more an organization wrapped itself in the flag of doing good, the more you needed to peel back the layers and see what was really hiding inside.

The unease still clawed at my chest.

“Chloe, do me a favor and look up who their shareholders and legal representatives are.”

“Mom!” Chloe's voice pitched high with frustration. “I am exhausted from work, and I don't have the time to look up random details for you. If you're that worried about the pasta, just throw it in the trash! It’s five pounds of pasta. I'll even pay you twenty bucks to make up for it!”

I shut my mouth and let the subject drop. They only came home once a month, and I didn't want to have an argument with them over this.

That afternoon, I walked down to the community center myself.

The storefront was small, with a few young volunteers wearing red vests bustling around inside.

The moment I pushed the door open, a lady in her early twenties greeted me with a sweet smile.

“Hi there! Welcome to the Caring Hearts Center! We're dedicated to providing support and care for the elderly in our community.”

“Oh, I was just passing by and wanted to take a look.”

I glanced around the room. A business license was framed on the wall alongside a handful of plaques, all issued by nonprofit organizations I had never heard of in my life.

“What's your name? If you sign up with us, we’ll give you a free gift. We're handing out pasta right now, and tomorrow we're giving away free laundry detergent!” The lady smiled, holding out a sign-up sheet.

My eyes scanned the paper. The sheer amount of personal data they were gathering went way beyond the boundaries of any normal community outreach program.

“Why do you need all this detailed information?” I asked with a smile.

The lady answered as if reciting from a handbook, “We just want to make sure we're providing targeted care. For example, if you have high blood pressure, our staff will pay extra attention to that when they come by to check on you. And if your children live far away, we can schedule more frequent home visits to make sure you're safe.”
