The Argument

(Millie POV)I picked a fight at six forty-five on a Wednesday evening because I am not, at twenty-three, the kind of woman who is good at waiting for explanations at night. I had been good at waiting for explanations for months. I had been good at waiting at the lake, in the garage, on the kitchen counter, in the pantry, on the lawn at the lake shore, in his bed, on the back porch, under the throw blanket in front of the bay window. I had been waiting with my body the way a person waits at a bus stop in the rain. I had been waiting for him to come to me with the explanation. He had not come. Adrianna was downstairs making dinner. He was not coming tonight either, and I was tired of being the woman he had spent the afternoon not coming to.“Mother,” I said at dinner.“Yes, baby?”“Did you ever have a roommate named Vivienne?”The kitchen went quiet in the way kitchens go quiet when something has been said that someone was not expecting. Adrianna set her fork down. “Vivienne Ashford?”

From Argument to Pleasure

(Millie POV)I pulled my knees out from under his hands. I stood up off the bed. I crossed the floor. I did not know what I was going to do until I was doing it, and the doing was to back myself against the wall by the closet door and to hold the door frame and to look at him from across the bedroom the way I had looked at him across the kitchen island the first morning of the affair.“If you want me and not her, come get me,” I said. “Come get me. Don't sit on the bed and tell me. Don't pick a fight at dinner and tell me. Come get me.”He got up off the bed. He crossed the floor. He did not put his hands on my face. He put them on my wrists and he pinned my hands above my head and he kissed my throat, and the kissing was not a kiss, it was an answer, and the answer was the sharp hard final thing he had been building toward for weeks. Richard’s mouth dragged hot and open against my pulse. His teeth scraped my skin. I felt something move down my spine. His body pressed mine harder into

Almost

(Richard POV)Adrianna brought home the wrong wine. Vivienne had texted me the wine list by Tuesday. Three reds she liked, two whites she preferred, a champagne Adrianna had served at her 40th birthday party two years ago. The champagne had been Vivienne's recommendation. Vivienne had recommended the champagne because Vivienne was making this dinner into a thing it had not yet been, and the thing it was becoming was a small, careful stage Vivienne was going to put on in our kitchen so Millie could see Vivienne performing the role of a woman who had been a wife in a house she had not been a wife in for fourteen years. Adrianna had not bought the champagne. Adrianna had bought a rosé in a bottle with a pink ribbon. Adrianna was already her bright, untouchable self. She had a butcher in town, a florist, a cleaning crew she had hired without telling me, an apron she had bought for the occasion that she was wearing with too much enthusiasm.“Sunday dinner,” she had said. “My favorite kind.

Missed Period

(Millie POV)I noticed the day after Vivienne's dinner. Sunday night bled into Monday morning and I bled through a tampon I shouldn't have needed to bleed through, and the not-bleeding told me things my body had been quietly trying to tell me for a week. I was late. I have been a woman for ten years. I have known the rhythm of my body since I was thirteen. I have never had a regular cycle the way Mom has had hers since Mom was fifteen. Twenty-eight days on the dot, predictable, the kind of cycle a woman brags about. Mine has been irregular since it started. Mine used to skip a week every few months when I was fifteen and kept me guessing until the cramps pulled through. I had never been alarmed by a late period because my late periods had not yet cost me anything. This late period was going to cost me something.I told Mom I was going out for a drive on Tuesday. Mom did not ask where I was going because Mom had stopped asking me where I was going when I was sixteen and had not picked

Vivienne at the Office

(Richard POV)Vivienne came at noon on Wednesday. She did not knock. Vivienne has never in her life knocked on a door she had decided to walk through. My assistant was at lunch. Vivienne knew my assistant's schedule the way Vivienne knows everyone's schedule, including mine. Vivienne has been collecting calendars since before she married me. Vivienne has always believed that knowing when a person eats lunch was the same as knowing when to walk into the room the person was not in. She walked into my office in a charcoal coat. She did not take the coat off. She set a small paper bag on my desk. The paper bag was from a bakery four blocks away, a bakery I had been going to alone for six months because Adrianna did not like sweets and Millie had been in college when the bakery had opened.“You like the almond croissants,” Vivienne said.“I used to.”“You would still like this one. Out of politeness.”She did not sit in the chair across from my desk. She sat in the chair at the side of my

Two Pink Lines

(Millie POV)Adrianna knocked on the bathroom door at nine forty-two on a Wednesday evening. I was sitting on the closed toilet lid with the second test in my hand. The second test had been more conclusive than the first. The second test had the word YES in digital letters and not the two lines I had been staring at for a week, and the word YES was a thing my hand was holding the way a hand holds an object it cannot put down.I had been sitting in this bathroom for forty minutes because Adrianna had asked me to come down and chat, and Adrianna asking me to come down and chat had become the thing Adrianna did when Adrianna wanted to know something she had decided to find out tonight, and I had not yet put my face back into the kind of face Adrianna could find things in, and the bathroom had been the closest door to my body.“Millie? Honey? You've been in there forever.”“I'm okay, Mom.”“You sure, baby? I made tea. I want to talk to you.”“Be right out.”I looked at the test in my hand

He Knows Before She Tells Him

(Richard POV)I had begun to notice, as Vivienne had left on Sunday afternoon and Millie had gone up to take a nap and Adrianna had gone to Marcy's for lunch, the things a man notices in a woman when he has just had the conversation I had just had with Millie. Millie's exhaustion, which I had been noticing for ten days. The way she put her hand on her lower back when she stood at the kitchen counter. The way she had stopped drinking her morning coffee.“I'm just not feeling it, Daddy.” The way she had started craving things at strange hours like orange juice, mostly, and once a single slice of cold ham from the refrigerator at eleven at night in her robe. The ham had been the moment I knew. I had known the week before she had told me. I had known by the orange juice. I had known by the ham. I had known by the way her face had gone slightly green in the grocery aisle two days before the test had been positive and she had come out of the bathroom pale and quiet and not yet ready to say

Telling Him

(Millie POV)He kissed my stomach. I had not yet given him permission to touch my stomach. I had not yet given him the small, generous permission a woman gives a man whose baby she is carrying when she wants him to touch her stomach. He had taken the permission himself, the way he had taken all of me, not with force, not with cruelty, but with the slow, sure, patient certainty of a man who had been earning the right to touch my stomach for seven months and had decided, on Sunday morning, that he had earned it. The kiss was not a kiss. The kiss was a claim. The kiss was the same as you can't leave me now. I did not know yet what to do about the kiss. I sat up in bed on Monday morning and the room smelled like laundry and cedar and the lavender pillow spray Adrianna had been putting on the same pillow since the wedding, and the envelope Vivienne had sent was on the kitchen table downstairs and Adrianna was asleep in her bed and the morning was going to be the morning Adrianna opened th

Thirty Days

(Millie POV)Adrianna did not speak to us for four days. That is the way my mother does grief. She does it by performance. Adrianna does not cry. Adrianna does not throw things. Adrianna makes breakfast. She makes coffee. And she makes dinner. And she goes to bed at ten and gets up at six and makes lunch and goes to Marcy's and comes home humming a song from her last holiday in Mexico. Adrianna behaves the way a woman behaves when she has decided that behaving is the loudest thing she can do with her voice, and she has decided to do it for thirty days, and the thirty days are the thirty days she promised Richard in the kitchen in her lavender robe before she locked the door behind her. Richard did not leave the master bedroom for the first twenty-four hours. He slept downstairs on the couch. I made him coffee. He took it black. He did not look at me across the kitchen the way he had been looking at me across the kitchen. He looked at his hands. And he held his coffee with both hands.

The Garbage

(Millie POV)The first anonymous note came on a Wednesday.I was taking the kitchen garbage out at six forty-five in the morning. I had been taking the kitchen garbage out for Adrianna for nine years, she has had a thing about full kitchen garbage cans, that is, I'm now realizing in retrospect, the worst and most Adrianna thing about her. She had never once in my lifetime taken out the kitchen garbage herself, not once, not even the morning she came home from Tahoe with her pink suitcase. Her pink suitcase, her husband's letter, her bed lock, but not the kitchen garbage.I was carrying the bag down the back stairs when the note came loose from inside the can lining. I did not see the note at first. The note was white. The note was inside the bag like a thing that had been tucked carefully between yesterday's coffee grounds and the brown paper towel I had folded around an eggshell. I did not see the note until I had lifted the bag into the garbage bin. The bin lid was off. The bag opene
