The coin sat on Kaelen's desk for three days before anyone found a use for it beyond staring at it. "Old minting, but not decorative," Corvin said, turning it under the lamplight for what had to be the hundredth time. "Struck for circulation. Somewhere there's a treasury that hasn't touched daylight in thirty years, and someone's been spending out of it." "Spending it how, without anyone noticing?" "Carefully. Small amounts. Border towns. Couriers who don't ask questions." Corvin set it down. "I've got a contact in the southern trade routes. If this coin's turned up anywhere recently, he'll know within the week." Aeloria picked it up herself, turning the crescent moon crest over in her fingers, the same crest that hung against her own collarbone. "It's strange. Holding something that belonged to my family before I knew I had one." "Does it feel like anything?" Kaelen asked. "The way the fire does?" "No." She set it down harder than she meant to. "Just metal. I wanted it to

Wystan came to Silver Hollow himself this time, no chapel, no careful secrecy, arriving in broad daylight with an escort small enough to suggest he'd finally decided hiding cost more than it protected. Fenna showed him into the study with obvious curiosity, clearly unused to seeing a Council Elder arrive at Silver Hollow's door without weeks of formal notice first."After Millbrook," he said without preamble, settling into the chair Kaelen offered him with the stiffness of a man whose joints had stopped forgiving sudden movement decades ago, "I decided thirty years of silence was no longer a debt I could afford to keep paying." He stopped. Started again. "I've kept quiet for thirty years. I can't anymore. Not after a healer and a child.""What else do you know?" Aeloria asked."More than I told you in that chapel. I was frightened then. I find myself less frightened now, which is either wisdom or simply exhaustion, and I no longer particularly care which." Wystan folded his hands. "Yo

Calista's letter arrived three days before the wedding, and this one came with none of the careful anonymity of the last. Aeloria had been in the middle of a fitting for the small silver dress Nyra insisted the occasion still deserved, and the interruption felt, for one disorienting moment, like two entirely separate lives colliding in the same room. ‘My father received word this morning of Voss's proposed Council seat. He intends to support it. I confronted him tonight, and for the first time in my life, he told me the truth instead of managing me. Voss holds a debt over our entire pack, not just my father personally, one large enough that refusing him risks exposing something my father has spent twenty years keeping buried. I don't know what it is. I only know he's frightened enough that he's finally frightened of losing me too, which is the closest thing to remorse I've ever seen from him. Be careful. I think Voss is close to whatever he's actually building toward, and I think my

"Draven." Voss said the name again, quieter this time, and something in it had shifted from warning into something closer to a threat dressed up as concern. "Think carefully about what you're about to do to your own pack." "I've thought about nothing else for twenty years." Draven rose fully from his seat now, hands visibly unsteady, and turned to face the gathered Council rather than the man beside him. The whole chamber seemed to lean forward at once, waiting. "Twenty years ago, I made a mistake. A young one, a foolish one, the kind of mistake a man makes when he's certain no one will ever find out. Thane Voss found out. He's held it over me ever since, and I have spent two decades doing whatever he asked rather than let this Council, or my own daughter, learn what I did." "Draven, I would strongly advise…" "I don't want your advice anymore." Draven's voice cracked, twenty years of careful compliance finally breaking apart in front of a chamber full of witnesses. His hands were s

They freed all four captives before the sun fully rose, Calista leaning heavily on Corvin's arm as they climbed back out of the shaft, the three strangers following in a stunned, silent line, blinking against daylight none of them had seen in longer than they could say. One of them, a young man barely out of boyhood, stumbled and nearly fell the moment sunlight actually touched his face, as though the brightness itself were a physical weight he'd forgotten how to carry."Easy," Kaelen said, catching his arm. "You're safe now. No one's going to hurt you again."The young man didn't answer. He stared at the sky like he'd forgotten it existed.Corvin hadn't spoken since they'd cleared the shaft. Aeloria noticed it as they made camp to wait out the ride home, his usual running commentary on terrain and threat absent, his jaw locked tight enough that a muscle jumped in his cheek every time the firelight caught his face."You're quiet.""I've seen bad things. Served under Kaelen before he r
