POV: AlexanderThe blue blast threw a wall of heat straight into my face.I didn't watch the pieces of the helicopter fly into the gray sky. I spun around, my boots sliding in the wet gravel, and threw my entire body weight forward. Elena was running down the pier, her eyes wide with terror, her hands reaching out for me."Get down!" I roared.I tackled her into the mud just as the shockwave rolled over us. The sound was a metallic tear, a violent roar of burning lithium and chemical fuel that sucked the oxygen right out of our lungs. Pieces of metal clattered against the rusted shipping containers around us.I kept my arms locked over her head, pressing her face down into my chest. My back felt like it was on fire, the heat radiating through my shirt, but I didn't move an inch until the rain started to hiss against the burning wreckage.Elena was gasping for air against my ribs, her small fingers clutching the wet fabric at my waist. "Alex... Leo... where is Leo?""He's with Logan,"

POV: Alexander"Cut the netting!" I roared, throwing my body against the heavy nylon mesh that had pinned us to the wooden pylons. The fibers creaked under my weight, but they were reinforced with thin steel wire. Above us, the shadow of Julian's transport helicopter was already rising, the downwash from the rotors flattening the river water into a white frenzy.Elena was on her knees, her fingers clawing at the thick ropes near the console of the patrol boat. "Alex, it's not cutting! The throttle is jammed under the frame!""Get back, Elena!" I grabbed a loose metal iron crowbar from the boat's emergency locker and jammed it into the structural link of the crane's pulley network. I threw my entire weight downward, my shoulder popping with a sickening click as the leverage snapped the lower locking ring. The net slackened. The patrol boat surged forward, its hull slamming violently against the side of the cargo ship as the engine screamed back to life.I didn't check my arm. I grabbed

POV: Alexander"Step into the cabin, Elena," I muttered, my voice flat, my left hand already dropping the crowbar and reaching for the throttle of the hidden harbor launch tied to the lower pylon.Eleanor West didn't lower her rifle. The red laser dot stayed glued right to Leo's chest, right where his little heart was slamming against his ribs. "Don't move that throttle, Alex. My finger is already at the pressure point. One click and the boy's chest cavity collapses.""You won't shoot," Elena said, stepping squarely into the path of the beam. She didn't look at the gun. She looked directly into Eleanor's cold, calculating eyes. "If you kill Leo, the biometric registry for the Astorian treaty shuts down permanently. Your family becomes worthless to the ministry by midnight.""I don't need the treaty anymore, Dr. Lin," Eleanor sneered, her silver hair whipping around her face as the yacht's engine backwash hit the concrete wall. "Diana Sterling just bought my family's remaining debt in

POV: Alexander"Elena! Elena, look at me!" I screamed, my voice tearing through the sound of the rain as I caught her falling body. Her skin went instantly cold, her limbs stiffening in my arms as the continuous beep of Leo's watch monitor pierced the night. I fell to my knees on the iron grating, pulling her head up against my chest. Her lips were turning an ashen gray, her dark eyes rolled back."Mom! Mom, wake up!" Leo shrieked, throwing his small body over her legs, his tiny hands desperately shaking her knees. "Dad, make her wake up!""Mark!" I roared into my earpiece, my hand crushing the fabric of Elena's wet shirt as I pressed my ear against her chest. Nothing. No thumping. No double pulse from the twins. Absolute silence. "Mark, get the medical team up here now! She's flatlining! The cytotoxin is shutting down her heart!""The elevators are jammed from the explosion, Chairman!" Mark's voice cracked through the static, sounding completely desperate. "The stairs are flooded! Yo

POV: Alexander"Pressure! Mark, give me the trauma pack now!"I threw myself onto the floorboards of the inflatable boat, my knees slamming into the hard plastic ribs as the dark red pool expanded under Elena. I stripped off my heavy wool jacket, rolling it into a tight ball, and jammed it hard against her thighs. My hands were immediately covered in her blood, hot and terrifying against my freezing skin."Alex," Elena choked out, her head thrashing against the wet rubber, her teeth clicking together so violently she could barely form the words. "The numbers... look at the watch... they are dropping too fast...""Don't look at the watch!" I roared, my palm pressing down with all my weight, my chest heaving as the rain beat down on us. "Look at me! Keep your eyes on my face, Elena! You are not dying here! Mark, where is that damn medicine?""The silver launch is coming back!" Leo shrieked from the bow, his tiny arms wrapped around the radar console as the boat rocked violently in the f
