All Chapters of Dogtags and Direwolves - Rowan’s Awakening : Chapter 21 - Chapter 30

Morning came quietly. For the first time since Rowan had entered the Black Forest, she woke to birdsong instead of silence. She opened her eyes beneath a blanket of pine boughs, the cool scent of cedar filling the air. Thin rays of sunlight filtered through the towering trees, painting shifting patterns across the forest floor. For one blissful second, she forgot where she was. Then the memories returned. The Veil.Mara.The silver Direwolf. The feather tucked safely inside her jacket. And Elias.Always Elias. She sat up slowly, rubbing sleep from tired eyes.Something warm pressed gently against her shoulder.Fen.He lay curled beside her, one massive foreleg stretched just close enough that it rested against the edge of her blanket. She smiled.“So that’s why I wasn’t freezing.”Fen opened one amber eye.His tail thumped exactly once.“You could’ve just admitted you were worried.”The Direwolf yawned dramatically before looking away.Rowan laughed.“Right.”“Pure coincidence.”⸻The

The ancient horn echoed once more.Long.Low.Mournful.Every Direwolf stood motionless, ears fixed toward the northern mountains.Even the birds had fallen silent.Rowan looked from face to face.“What does it mean?”Kael answered first.“It is a gathering call.”“For all Direwolves?”He nodded.“For every Guardian still living.”A cold knot formed in Rowan’s stomach.“You said there weren’t any.”“There haven’t been.”His amber eyes settled on her.“Until now.”⸻“No.”The word escaped before she could stop it.“I’m not a Guardian.”“I’m an Army medic.”“I barely understand what’s happening.”“I’ve spent half my time here trying not to lose my mind.”Arawn stepped forward.“Every Guardian has spoken those words.”Rowan folded her arms.“I seriously doubt that.”The ancient rider smiled.“You would be surprised.”⸻Matthias unfolded another weathered map across a fallen stump.Except…It wasn’t the same map.Lines shifted as though someone invisible continued redrawing the forest ben

The mountain continued to crumble long after the first collapse.Great clouds of gray dust billowed into the sky, swallowing the distant peaks until they disappeared behind a curtain of stone and ash.No one spoke. No one dared.Even the forest seemed to recoil.Rowan stared toward the northern horizon.“What…was that?”Matthias answered before Arawn could.“I’ve lived beside this forest for thirty-three years.”“I’ve never seen the mountains move.”Arawn’s voice was barely more than a whisper.“They weren’t moving.”“They were opening.”⸻Fen stood motionless. His ears were forward. His entire body rigid. Not with fear.Recognition.Rowan slowly rested a hand against the thick fur along his shoulder.“You know what’s coming.”His amber eyes met hers.He blinked once.Yes.The answer settled into her chest without a single word. She wasn’t imagining it anymore. She was beginning to understand him.⸻The Wardens regrouped in the clearing.Weapons were checked.Ammunition counted.Medic

The prophecy has begun. The words settled over the clearing like frost. No one moved.Even the wind seemed unwilling to disturb the silence between the Direwolves and the hooded stranger.Rowan slowly lowered her rifle. Not because she trusted him.Because every instinct told her bullets were meaningless here.Fen stood directly in front of her, his massive shoulders rising and falling with controlled breaths. Blood stained the silver-gray fur along his left shoulder where he’d struck the trees, but he didn’t appear to notice. He never took his eyes off the stranger.Neither did the other Direwolves.Ten ancient guardians formed a living wall around Rowan.None growled.None barked. They simply waited.Prepared to die if necessary. The realization struck Rowan harder than she expected.“They’re protecting me…”The thought barely formed before Kael answered inside her mind. You are under our oath.Rowan’s head snapped toward him.“You can…”Kael inclined his head.Among our own… words

Rowan stared at the old woman.“That’s a little dramatic.”The Last Keeper didn’t smile.Neither did Fen.Rowan glanced down at him.“Seriously?”His golden eyes remained fixed on the woman. That was answer enough. The Keeper planted her staff into the damp earth and studied Rowan with an intensity that made her feel less like a soldier and more like a specimen under examination.“You think trust means believing he will protect you.”“I’ve seen him protect me.”“That is not what I asked.”Rowan’s jaw tightened.“Then what are you asking?”The woman’s gaze shifted to Fen.“Whether you trust him when he cannot protect you.”Silence.Rowan frowned.“I don’t understand.”“You will.”The Keeper turned and walked toward the trees.“Come.”Rowan didn’t move.“Where?”“The First Sanctuary.”Arawn stepped forward sharply.“You cannot take her there.”The Keeper stopped.Slowly, she looked over her shoulder.“I can.”“You know what waits inside.”“I do.”“And you would send her anyway?”“No.”T
