Theo was awake before either of them that morning, which meant Marielle knew something was wrong before she even opened her eyes. He came running into their room with his hair sticking up on one side and announced that Dad had promised to take the boat out. Grayson, who had been half asleep beside the window, opened one eye and asked why Theo was yelling at seven in the morning. “Because we're going on the boat.” Theo climbed onto the end of the bed. “You said today.” Grayson rubbed his face. “I did.” “So we're going now.” “We haven't had breakfast.” Theo considered that for a second. “We can eat on the boat.” Marielle pulled the pillow over her face. “You created this problem yourself.” Grayson looked at her. “I know.”By the time they reached the dock, Theo had asked whether the boat could go faster than a car, whether fish could hear the engine, whether sharks followed boats because they were curious, whether dolphins liked children, and whether his father had ever driven a boat in

Theo decided Marielle could not be allowed near the water without proper supervision. He made this announcement over breakfast while she was halfway through her toast, and before she could ask what he meant, he had already turned to Grayson with the seriousness of a man arranging a military operation. “She needs lessons.” Grayson looked at Marielle. “Apparently you need lessons.” “I can swim.” Theo shook his head. “You can float.” Marielle put her toast down. “I beg your pardon?” “Yesterday you held onto the side the whole time.” “I was being careful.” “You were scared.” “I was not scared.” Grayson took another sip of coffee and tried very hard not to smile. “This is going well.” She pointed at him. “Don't start.” Theo climbed down from his chair. “Dad can teach you.” “Why does Dad have to teach me?” “Because he's good at swimming.” Grayson looked at his son. “You planned this.” Theo grinned. “A little.” By the time they reached the pool, Marielle had already decided that agreeing ha

Marielle found Grayson in the sitting room with one of the old photographs spread across his lap. He had been looking through them for several minutes, although he had not turned the page once. She noticed that when she came in, he almost closed the album.“Caught you,” she said.He looked up. “Doing what?”“Looking guilty.”“I wasn't aware looking at photographs was a crime.”“With you, I wouldn't rule it out.”A small smile touched his mouth, but it disappeared when she sat beside him. The photograph in his hands showed two boys standing outside the mansion, both dressed in football kits. Julian had one arm around his shoulders. Grayson looked about ten, maybe eleven, and there was dirt on one knee of his shorts.“You were tiny,” Marielle said.“I was normal.”“You were tiny.”“I was eleven.”“Exactly.”He gave her a look, then looked back at the photograph. “Julian was always bigger.”“Were you close?”“We were brothers.”“That wasn't what I asked.”Grayson ran his thumb along the

By the time Marielle came downstairs, Theo had already claimed the best chair at the breakfast table and was explaining to Grayson why pancakes tasted better on an island.Grayson looked up from his coffee. “That makes no sense.”“It does,” Theo said, reaching across the table for another piece of bacon. “Everything tastes better here.”Marielle pulled out the chair beside him and sat down. “Even your father's terrible pancakes?”Theo looked at the plate, then at Grayson. “Daddy didn't make these.”Grayson lowered his cup slowly. “I heard that.”Marielle covered her mouth, but the laugh escaped anyway.Theo grinned. “I asked the cook to make them.”“You asked?”“I told him.”“Ah. Of course.” Grayson took another drink. “My mistake.”Marielle reached for a pancake and cut off a piece with her fork. She had expected the morning to feel strange after everything they had talked about the previous night. Instead, she found herself arguing with a seven-year-old over the last piece of bacon

The first warning came just after lunch, when one of the island staff appeared at the dining room door with a tablet in his hand and an expression that made Marielle put down her fork. She had been trying to convince Theo that eating three pieces of cake before dinner was a terrible idea, while Theo had been explaining, with the confidence of a child who had never suffered the consequences of anything, that cake was basically bread with sugar on it and therefore counted as a proper meal. Grayson had been sitting across from them, pretending to read something on his phone while clearly listening to every word. The moment the staff member stepped inside, he looked up. "Mr Hale, the weather service has issued a storm warning for the area. It should reach the island later today.” Theo's face lit up immediately. “A storm?” Marielle closed her eyes. Of course he would be excited. Of course.“How bad?” Grayson asked, already putting his phone down.“The wind is expected to pick up within the
