Starting Over

Gemma“When was the last time you did something simply because you wanted to?” Gigi asked.“What do you mean?”“For yourself, Gemma. Not because someone needed you to. Not because it was expected of you. Just because it made you happy.”I frowned as I tried to think of an answer. Surprisingly, I didn’t have to think for long.“I would cook.”The answer came so naturally that it caught both of us by surprise.“There she is,” Gigi smiled softly. “I’ve been waiting for her to show up.”Gigi stayed with me for the rest of the day. She talked when I did not feel like talking, ordered dessert I did not ask for, and somehow managed to make my penthouse feel a little less empty. She never once asked me to explain how I was feeling or pressured me to pretend I was okay. She simply sat beside me and kept me company, and her presence alone was enough. The next morning, I found myself driving aimlessly through the city until I parked in front of a grocery store.Maybe I was hungry.Or maybe, for

blacklisted

Gemma “You’ve been avoiding your hospital appointments, Gemma.”Well, that certainly wasn’t the welcome I was expecting.I looked up at Dr. Harris and pretended to consider his accusation for a moment before taking my seat across from him.“Avoiding is such a strong word,” I said. “I’ve simply been busy.”He raised an eyebrow at me. “Three cancelled appointments isn’t busy.”“Fine,” I sighed. “I’ve been selectively busy.”That earned me a look that said he wasn’t amused by my attempt at humor.Dr. Harris had been my doctor long enough to know when I was trying to joke my way out of uncomfortable conversations. Unfortunately for me, he was also smart enough not to let me get away with it.He opened my medical file and adjusted his glasses before looking back at me.“Gemma, your treatment cannot be delayed forever.”There it was.I leaned back in my chair and sighed again. “I know.”“No, I don’t think you do,” he shook his head slightly. “You’ve been putting this off for weeks.”I didn

A Better Evening Than Expected

GemmaFor a moment, no one spoke.I was beginning to wonder if I had somehow misheard what the manager had just said.Mr. Richard Black, you have been permanently blacklisted from our restaurant and will not be served this evening. That certainly wasn’t how I expected tonight to end.“What?” Angela was the first to recover from her shock.“There has to be some kind of joke,” Richard said immediately, his face darkening. “Do you have any idea who you’re speaking to?”“Perfectly, sir,” the manager replied politely. “That is why we have confirmed your identity before approaching you.”“This is ridiculous!” Angela snapped. “My fiancé is a vip member here, you cannot simply blacklist him without explanation.”“I’m afraid I can neither disclose the reason nor discuss this matter any further,” the manager said professionally. “I must ask both of you to leave the premises immediately.”Richard laughed in disbelief.“You must be out of your mind. Call your owner. Right now.”“I’m afraid that w

Nothing serious.

Julian“Cancel the deal.”The conference room fell silent. The vice president sitting across from me froze. It had taken his team three months to secure the acquisition, and I had just dismissed it in two words.“Sir?” he asked cautiously.“I don’t believe I stuttered.”“No, sir. It’s just that…”“Then there shouldn’t be a problem.”Working for Ferguson Holdings had its advantages. The salaries were generous, the bonuses impressive, and career advancement was almost guaranteed. The downside was simple—I had very little patience for incompetence. No one ever complained about my decisions. At least, not twice.I signed the document Andrew handed me before standing on my feet. “Reschedule the Tokyo meeting for next week. I will review the London proposal tonight. Anything else?”“No sir.”“Good.”The executives around the table quietly released the breaths they had been holding as I walked out of the conference room.Andrew, my executive assistant followed closely behind me as we made ou

Wild After Midnight

Gemma“If you don’t open this door in the next thirty seconds, I’m calling the security and telling them my best friend has been kidnapped.”I glanced at my phone before looking at the front door of my penthouse.“You have exactly twenty-two seconds left, Gemma!”I sighed before making my way toward the door. To find Gigi standing in the hallway in six-inch heels, a tiny black dress, and enough attitude to intimidate people in the building. She brushed past me like she owned the place.“Good evening to you too,” I said dryly. But she ignored me “So no greeting? No hug?” I asked as I shut the door behind her.“No. We’re skipping the pleasantries tonight. Go get dressed. We’re going clubbing.”“Excuse me?” I blinked, “But I told you over the phone I'm not interested.”“We’re going clubbing.”I laughed immediately. “No.”“Yes.”“No.”“Yes.”“Gigi, I’m thirty-five.”“And gorgeous. What’s your point?”“My point is that people my age don’t go clubbing.”She slowly turned to look at me as th

Caught

Gemma For a moment, I genuinely thought I was hallucinating. The flashing lights of the club weren’t helping matters either. One moment, I had been dancing with a stranger and singing my lungs out to one of my favorite songs. Next, someone grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from the dance floor. And somehow, that someone happened to be Julian Ferguson. He looked gorgeous in an all-black suit that probably cost more than my entire outfit. His tie had long disappeared somewhere during the evening, the first few buttons of his shirt undone, revealing just enough to make me wonder if billionaires were engineered to look this hot. “Julian?” He stared at me for a few seconds before glancing at the guy standing with me. The poor man immediately decided tonight was not the night to die and quietly disappeared into the crowd. Coward. “What are you doing here?” I asked curiously. He raised an eyebrow. “That’s my question.” I blinked twice before remembering where I was.

An Unexpected Guest

GemmaI slowly opened my eyes and immediately regretted every extra shot of tequila I had taken the night before. I wasn't sure what woke me up first—the slight headache or the unfamiliar silence around me.The first thing I noticed was that Julian wasn’t beside me.For a brief moment, I simply stared at the unfamiliar ceiling before memories from the previous night came rushing back all at once. The club.Tequila.Julian dragging me out of the club.My face immediately grew warm as I buried it under the blanket for a few seconds. This was officially becoming a problem.I sat up slowly and glanced at the alarm clock on the bedside table. It was barely seven in the morning. Pulling myself out of bed, I looked around the room. Beside the bed was a glass of water, some medicine, and a folded note.My brows furrowed slightly before I picked it up.>Typical Julian. No unnecessary words. No dramatic g

The One Thing I Couldn’t Replace

GemmaWe had just been dismissed for our lunch break when I decided to walk to my favorite coffee shop a few blocks away from my school. While waiting for my order, my eyes landed on a familiar face sitting by the window.“Sam?”My heart stopped for a second.I would recognize that face anywhere. It didn’t matter how much taller he had gotten or how much his features now resembled Richard’s. To me, he was still the little boy who used to fall asleep in my arms halfway through his favorite cartoons. He was here. Sitting only a few feet away from me. Alive. Smiling at whatever was on his phone. I forgot the document he had handed me with his own two hands. His cold voice telling me he wanted nothing to do with me. The way he looked me straight in the eye as if I were a stranger. All I saw was my son.“Sam,” I called again, smiling before I could stop myself. He turned around, and the smile on my face slowly disappeared. Standing beside him was Angela. She looked surprised to see me, b

Flowers and Black Cards

Gemma The first thing that crossed my mind when I opened my apartment door was that whoever delivered whatever was sitting outside clearly had no respect for moderation. The flowers practically took over my entire doorway. White roses, pink roses, and enough baby’s breath to decorate an entire wedding reception. They were arranged so beautifully. There was absolutely no need for anyone to send this many flowers to another human being unless they were apologising for accidentally running them over with a car. Tucked neatly between the bouquet was a black envelope with my name written across it. > I folded the note and placed it back inside the envelope before someone saw me smiling like an idiot in my own hallway. Wasn’t smiling because he sent them, at least that’s what I told myself. The truth was, I couldn’t remember the last time anyone had ever sent me flowers. Not even while I was married to my ex-husba

The Charity Auction

GemmaBy Saturday morning, I had accepted that there was absolutely nothing I could do about Julian’s black card. Once Gigi got involved, losing the argument was inevitable. By noon, she dragged me out shopping despite my numerous excuses not to go.We walked into the third luxury boutique of the afternoon, I was beginning to understand why rich people looked so happy all the time.Shopping was therapeutic when you weren’t calculating how much would be left in your account afterwards.“This is too much,” I muttered as I looked at the price tag on a dress. “For this amount of money, this dress should cook for me and do my laundry.”The saleslady laughed politely while Gigi rolled her eyes.“You’re going with Julian Ferguson, not attending your secondary school graduation. Stop embarrassing yourself.”“I’m embarrassed for the person that priced this dress.”After rejecting what felt like a hundred dresses, we finally found one that made both Gigi and the sales assistants gasp in awe.T
