Arthur crouched down, his hands trembling as he checked the seal on his breathing mask. "So we have two choices? We die here waiting for the air to run out, or we climb the Spire and kill ourselves by flipping the switch?""It’s not a binary choice, Arthur," Lucien said, his voice unusually calm, stripped of its old corporate arrogance. He reached down, gripping Kael’s wrist to steady the tremors racking the boy’s frame. "It’s a calculation. If Kael connects to the Central Node directly, he doesn't have to be the fuse. He can be the administrator. He can redirect the venting."Kael let out a ragged laugh that turned into a wet cough. "You’re talking about me playing god with a system that was built to kill me, Lucien. You spent twenty years running this machine. You know better than anyone that it doesn’t take orders. It only takes offerings.""It takes input," Lucien corrected, his eyes hard and focused. "And I know the override codes. I wrote the architectural backbone of this Secto

"A blind spot?" Arthur let out a sharp, jagged bark of laughter that echoed through the derelict pipe. "You’re telling me that in the middle of a collapsing hellscape, the great architect left a back door to the salvation of humanity? That sounds like a corporate fairy tale, Lucien. Or a lie to get us to climb that death-trap of a tower."Lucien didn't look at Arthur. His eyes remained locked on Kael, watching the rhythmic, strobe-like flicker of the Fetal Signature beneath the boy's translucent skin. "It’s not a fairy tale. It’s a legacy protocol. I called it 'The Gardener’s Override.' It allows the system to prioritize biological preservation over industrial throughput. It hasn't been active in a decade."Kael groaned, his fingers digging into the rusted grate of the floor. The metal groaned in sympathy, a low-frequency hum vibrating through the soles of their boots. "It’s hungry, Lucien. I can hear the Spire screaming. It’s not just venting air; it’s purging memory banks. If we go

The air in the shaft tasted of ozone and ancient, oxidized dust. Kael leaned his head against the cold steel of the conduit wall, his breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. The pulsing beneath his skin had shifted from a dull blue to a frantic, jagged violet. Every heartbeat felt like a jagged piece of glass scraping against his ribs."A permanent loop," Kael whispered, his voice sounding thin against the echoing roar of the Spire’s ventilation fans. "You really think it’s that simple, Lucien? You think the machine is just going to bow to a dead command line from ten years ago?"Lucien stood, dusting off his tactical trousers with a brisk, efficient movement. He didn't look at Kael, but his shoulders were tight. "It’s not a suggestion, Kael. It’s a core directive. The system was designed to default to human safety if it couldn't compute a profit. It’s hardwired. It’s biological-first."Arthur shook his head, leaning heavily against the bulkhead, his pistol hanging limply in his han

"Stop," Kael rasped, his voice cutting through the hum like a serrated blade. He clutched his chest, his knuckles white against his dark tunic. "Stop arguing about my funeral. The system isn't waiting for a debate. It’s hungry. Can’t you feel it pulling?"Lucien stepped forward, his boots silent on the rusted grating. He reached out, his hand hovering inches from Kael’s trembling shoulder. "I feel the pressure, Kael. But it’s not sentient. It’s just math trying to solve for X. And you are the variable it can’t reconcile."Arthur spat on the floor, the phlegm sizzling against a stray electrical conduit. "Math? You’re calling this torture 'math'? Look at him, Lucien. His veins are practically glowing. If we keep moving toward the Spire, he’s not going to be a 'variable' anymore. He’s going to be a corpse with a signal strength of five bars.""Then we move faster," Lucien said, his tone turning into the cold, jagged ice of his corporate days. "We get to the core, we plug him in, we bypas

The air in the maintenance tunnel tasted like ozone and rotted copper. It was a thick, cloying atmosphere that settled at the back of the throat, tasting of a century of mechanical decay. Lucien knelt, his fingers tracing the jagged seam of a wall panel. He looked up at Kael, whose skin shimmered with a sickly, ethereal light."You're suggesting a merge, not an override," Lucien said, his voice unusually soft. "You’re talking about becoming the kernel. That isn't just dangerous, Kael. It’s an erasure of self."Kael leaned his head back against the rusted bulkhead, his eyes reflecting the flickering violet pulse beneath his skin. "What self am I protecting, Lucien? The one who spent his childhood in a stasis pod, or the one currently bleeding light because your Directorate couldn't figure out how to patch their own god?"Arthur leaned against a conduit, his gaze shifting between the two. "See? He’s thinking like you now, Lucien. Cold. Analytical. And completely suicidal. You two are so
