Lucian The meeting had been scheduled for weeks, though I'd delayed it twice already, uncertain how to properly prepare the men who'd built their entire careers within the structure I now intended to formally dismantle. I spent the morning before it reviewing my father's old files, searching for some guidance in the careful, methodical notes he'd left behind, though I suspected he'd never once imagined his son standing at the head of this particular table intending to dissolve everything he'd spent his own life building. I gathered them in the same conference room where my father had once made every significant decision governing this organization's traditional operations—dark wood paneling, a long table that had witnessed decades of decisions I could only partially imagine, twelve men, most considerably older than me, each one having served the family for decades in capacities that existed entirely outside anything a legitimate business would recognize as employment. Marco stood n

Aurora Marco's investigation into Frank Delacroix expanded considerably over the following week, revealing a man whose history proved, on closer examination, considerably more concerning than his initial profile had suggested. I found myself, during that stretch of days, unable to focus properly on anything at De Luca Group, my mind perpetually circling back to the folder of surveillance photographs Marco had left with us, the grainy images of men meeting outside nondescript buildings somehow managing to feel more threatening than anything more dramatic might have. "He's not simply a mercenary for hire," Marco explained, during an emergency session gathered around the dining table, a fresh folder of documents spread before us, each page carefully organized with the methodical precision that had carried him through every previous crisis alongside us. "Delacroix ran his own operation for nearly a decade, primarily focused on debt collection through intimidation, before a federal inve

LucianThe meeting was arranged for a Thursday afternoon, a public park bench overlooking the harbor, chosen specifically by Ricci for reasons he hadn't explained but Sarah suggested were likely sentimental—a location, Marco later confirmed, where my father had occasionally brought him during quieter moments throughout their decades of association. I spent the morning reviewing Sarah's contingency protocols with an obsessive thoroughness that even she eventually gently suggested had crossed from prudent preparation into anxious repetition."I don't like this," Aurora said, that morning, watching me dress with a tension she made no effort to hide, sitting on the edge of our bed with her arms wrapped around her knees. "I understand why you feel it's necessary. I still don't like it.""I know," I said, crossing the room to hold her, feeling her fingers grip the back of my shirt with a fierceness that spoke to everything she wasn't saying aloud. "I promise you, Aurora, I'm not walking int

AuroraThe week we spent finalizing our return home carried its own particular rhythm—Marco confirming, day by day, that Delacroix's custody remained secure, that no unexpected legal complications had arisen to threaten the resolution we'd fought so hard to achieve, that the federal prosecution was proceeding exactly as anticipated. I found myself, during those final days at the secured property, gradually allowing my shoulders to unknot, the particular hypervigilance that had defined the preceding weeks slowly, incrementally releasing its grip."His bail hearing is scheduled for Thursday," Marco reported, during one of our final briefings at the secured property, spreading a fresh legal summary across the kitchen table where we'd conducted so many of these careful, methodical updates. "Sarah's confident, given the severity of the evidence recovered, that he'll remain in custody through trial. His public defender has already indicated they're exploring a plea agreement, given how thor

AuroraMarco's team located Curtis Wren's apartment within thirty-six hours—a cramped one-bedroom above a laundromat in a part of the city I'd never had reason to visit, the kind of neighborhood where rent stayed low precisely because nobody asked too many questions about their neighbors."He's not there right now," Marco reported, gathering us again around the dining table that had become, over these exhausting weeks, something closer to a permanent command post than an actual place where our family ate meals. "My team's maintaining surveillance, but I want to be careful here. We're not law enforcement. We can watch him, document his movements, build a case Detective Alvarez can act on—but we can't detain him ourselves without creating exactly the kind of legal exposure that could ultimately undermine any prosecution.""I understand the constraint," Lucian said, though his tone carried a barely restrained frustration I recognized as mirroring my own. "But Marco, every hour we spend b
