Kai POV. The meeting finally came to an end. Executives began gathering their laptops and folders, and conversations slowly returned to the room. I stayed in my seat for a moment, watching Adrian speak to one of the department heads near the end of the table. This was the first time in a long while I’d seen him truly in his element. Adrian POV I couldn’t breathe, I really couldn’t breathe. It felt like something was lodged in my throat, making every breath difficult. My chest tightened painfully as panic crawled through my body. God, what have I done? That was the only thought running through my head. I was sweating profusely despite the air conditioner blasting cold air through the office. Adrian's POV The first thing Adrian did after Kai left his office was lock the door. He never locked his door. In all the years of building Aiden Corporation from a single floor of leased office space into a tower with his name stitched into the marble lobby, he had never once felt the need to lock his own office door. But he locked it now. He sank into the chair behind his desk, lowered his head into his hands, and, God help him, laughed. It was a short, disbelieving, slightly hysterical sound, the kind that came from somewhere inside him he didn’t recognize. “A whimper. I fucking whimpered.” He replayed it in his head, hating himself a little more each time. Kai had stood at the other side of that desk, all fire and fury and that stupid confident mouth of his, and said something filthy and reckless, and Adrian's body had betrayed him so completely that his brain hadn't even been consulted. By the time Adrian reached the office, he had revised the previous night into a catastrophe so complete it seemed impossible that anyone else had failed to notice it. Adrian adjusted the cuff of his shirt and walked to his office. He had slept with Kai. Not just slept, exactly. Adrian had spent the drive to work alternating between denial and panic, deciding at every red light that it had been a mistake. The atmosphere in the office had become a frozen tundra, and Adrian was the one shivering. For the past two weeks, Kai had transformed into the living embodiment of corporate professionalism. In the hallways, he was a ghost of courtesy. In meetings, he was literally a machine. He spoke to Adrian only when it pertained to quarterly reports or, in Adrian's words, some stupid logistical hurdle. There were no lingering touches, no secret smirks, no stolen glances or kisses that promised a wild night. To anyone watching, they were merely employer and, again in Adrian's words, stupid employee. But part of what almost drove Adrian mad was that the torture didn't end at six o'clock. Kai would wait until the moon was high before calling Adrian. Those nightly calls were intimate, hushed, and devastatingly sweet, but they were a crumb compared to the feast Adrian craved. Being treated like a stranger for ten hours a day only to be loved in the dark was driving Adrian to the brink of insanity.
