Diane's POVMy refusal hung in the air between us, and Zev's face twisted — hurt, then anger, then, slowest and hardest, understanding. He was a proud man being told *no* in front of his whole pack, and I watched him fight the part of himself that wanted to command, and I watched that part lose. He nodded once, stiff. "Alright," he said quietly. "You don't trust me. You're right not to. I have to earn that." And then, gentler: "But you'll let me stay near her? Just near?" Before I could answer, a sound cut through the crowd — a thin, cracked cry, an old woman's voice, breaking.
