Chapter 21. First Morning Alone

* Dorina *I woke up to the smell of coffee in the air, my eyes flew open. My back hurt, the mattress was far from comfortable but last night I was so dead tired to notice after sleep claimed me. I got up and flinched."Good morning Princess!”His greetings made any drowsiness left in me, so he was already up. And already dressed, thankfully. Or maybe not thankfully, my treacherous brain whispered. I looked at him and noticed that he was wearing a clean new T-shirt, dark gray and stretched tight over his broad shoulders. His hair was damp, like he had just come out of the bathroom. He was standing by the little two-burner stove in the corner that I hadn't even noticed last night, holding two steaming mugs. He looked too awake for someone who had slept on a couch that was too small for him.I sat up too fast and the blanket fell to my waist. My shawl was gone, it must have slipped off in the night. My pajamas were twisted, one strap sliding off my shoulder. I yanked it back up. I wasn

Chapter 22. Married Life

* Ivan *"So, how's married life boss?"I look up to see Randal grinning from ear to ear. He knows the deal between Princess Dorina and me but he still loves to tease me. I groaned and pretended not to hear him while I scanned the receipts on top of my table."Go and get ready to open our beerhouse, Randal, we need to get more customers for the days that we were closed."He glanced at me before instructing our waiter to help him. "Are you staying for the night boss? Or are you just waiting for sundown and you go home?"My eyes flew to the windows, it was almost sundown. I remembered telling her that I would be back before dark but I got caught up with some work. I wondered what she was doing right now."Boss? You good?" Randal asked, leaning on the doorframe. "You're doing that thing with your jaw again.""What thing?" I sounded irritated when I asked him."That thing where you look like you're about to punch a wall because you're thinking about someone."I threw a crumpled receipt at

Chapter 23. Danger

* Dorina *It's the third day I've lived with Ivan, and I am already bored. I was sipping from the hot mug of coffee one morning when he spoke."Listen, I am going to stay in the beerhouse tonight it's the weekend and it would be busy. I will send someone to guard the entrance of the apartment from below so I can be sure of your safety."His tone was serious. I raised an eyebrow. "You don't have to, I have been in and out of this apartment and the neighbors as well as the other wolves around us are keeping it to themselves. I think I will be alright."He shook his head and his eyes became alert. "It's different this time, we don't know if there would be rogues passing by. I don't want them to pick up your scent from the forest nearby. They have heightened senses, and they could attack or get curious about anything they find."I just realized that there was a certain change in his aura today. His thick brows are slightly furrowed and I remember him waking up on his couch last night and

Chapter 24. Monster Wolf

* Ivan *Despite the loud music and the stench of beer and smoke inside the beerhouse, my mind was off somewhere. To my old apartment and Dorina being watched by Mikael. The rain had begun to stop when it reached eleven in the evening."Hey boss, it's so busy the wolves seemed to have loved the rain while drinking." John, one of my waiters muttered after opening the door of my small office. The loud noise followed him."Where's Randal?"I stood up and walked towards the door. He nudged the counter outside. "His got his hands full boss.""Hmm, go help outside.""I have to leave Boss my time is up. I have to go home now."I sighed and glanced at the big clock hanging on the wall. The music was loud outside and even the customers were laughing without concern about the weather or whatever was going on.Am I the only one sensing the bad air around us and feeling the unwelcome presence of rogues lurking in the shadows? His eyes narrowed at me. "Boss? Are you good?"No. I wasn't good. The

Chapter 25. Comfort and Safety

* Dorina *I thought we would move away from that apartment, but Ivan just fixed everything, and luckily he bought a new bed. It was big enough for two, soft, and premium but still he sleeps on the couch. I could hear him stretching and murmuring something incoherent every time he woke up.He then proceeded to do his morning exercises on that small balcony. Two days after that incident, I am glad that Mikael survived. They occupied the other door of the apartment in the same building, I didn't know whose decision it was. But it helped in making me feel safer when Ivan is not around.I watched him from the kitchen. Same routine most of the days, silence in the morning. His bare feet on concrete, with breath fogging the morning air, and shirtless because he would be sweaty afterwards. His shoulders moved like he was trying to outrun something. Maybe the memory of that hallway. The couch was still pulled out. But his blanket was folded. One pillow. He'd rather sleep folded in half than

Chapter 26. Lone Wolf

* Ivan *"The rogues did major damage in the pack Ivan, ten of my warriors passed and six more are injured."I looked at the old Alpha in the nearby pack. Alpha Fredrick, the wolves of the border between the land of rogues and the village belong to his pack. Green Meadows pack and I don't belong to them. I'm not a rogue but a free wolf, although all the wolves working for me, including Randal belong to his pack."That ain't my problem Alpha, as you can see I am a businessman and my beerhouse is busy."He took a deep breath in, his wrinkles ran deep when his eyes scanned me."I know what you did to that one rogue who almost took your wife."That made me stiffined, I slowly returned my gaze to him."Stop right there!" My eyes turned a shade bluer when he mentioned the incident last week. "You have no right to meddle in my affairs. If you knew what happened and you knew who she is then you better keep what you have to say to yourself."Fear crossed his dark eyes when I slammed the table,

Chapter 27. Privacy Needed

* Dorina *The next morning when I woke up he was already gone..My blanket was pulled up to my shoulders though. And the pillow under my head wasn't mine, it was his. It smelled like pine and musk. I saw my pillows one beside me and the other on my feet.I sat up, with my hair still a mess, and stared at the empty couch. The blanket was folded, and Ivan was nowhere to be found.I sniffed the air, then noticed that the apartment smelled like... sawdust? Then I heard it noises. Banging. From the kitchen.I pushed the bedroom door, which is not really a door, it's just a curtain, and stopped dead.Mikael was holding a wooden frame that was almost as tall as him, sweating through his shirt. Felix was on a stepladder with a hammer in his mouth and three nails in his hand like he was some kind of human pincushion. And between my bed and the kitchenette, there was already half a wall."What are you doing?" I squeaked.Felix almost fell off the ladder. Mikael caught the frame before it could

Chapter 28. A Royal Blood

* Ivan *"Ugh, Alpha Fredrick won't stop asking about you Boss. I have to say I am this close to leaving the pack."Randal muttered while we were doing our monthly inventory at the counter. It's still early in the morning and we have more things to do before the bar opens in the afternoon."Nah, that's the last thing you ever need to. You have to belong to the pack Randal, otherwise, the pack wolves would call you a rogue."He watched me with a question on his face, I knew he would object because I didn't belong to any pack yet here I am. Living without fear of anyone, not even the Alpha King could scare me."Yeah, well, tell that to the others. Frederick's wolves keep sniffing around the bar after closing. They ask about you and about her too."My pen stopped."Her?" I said in my low voice.Randal leaned against the counter, suddenly turning his gaze in a crate of cheap vodka. "They didn't say her name. They just, you know how wolves are. New female scent in your territory. Mated but

Chapter 29. My Protector

* Dorina * After a few weeks in this apartment, I have never seen Ivan looking a bit worried or agitated. This is the first time and it made me feel afraid of what's going to come. Unlike the Palace where we used to have a hundred warriors protecting us, here I only have him. "Or. Maybe we should ask my father for h-," "No!" He immediately answered. His words cracked through the small apartment like a strong whip that made me flinch. He was standing by the door but he wasn't here. His eyes looked different. They weren't the ocean blue I was getting used to. They were wolf-gold, blown wide, glowing in the dim light of the half-finished apartment. His shoulders were heaving under his leather jacket. He hadn't taken it off. He hadn't even taken off his boots either. The dust from the bar was still on him. And he was looking at me like I was his prey but also someone that he needed to protect at the same time. "Ivan?" My voice was small when I called his name. He didn't

Chapter 30. Pay the Price

* Ivan * I lay on my back on the couch, pretending to get some rest, but my mind is working overtime. My heightened senses are listening to Princess Dorina in her bedroom, she's almost asleep. And then I could hear Mikael puffing a smoke while keeping watch downstairs. After a few hours, Felix would replace him so they could both rest. There is something I knew about the rogues. They won't wait for three days. It was a mistake that Alpha Fredrick believed. Only monsters with honor wait for three days if they said it. My nose flared when I smelled them then I heard their noise. Two hours later, Princess Dorina finally fell asleep. The wind shifted down the alley and brought it in through the crack under the back door. A dirty wet fur, rotten old blood, and that sour, desperate stink of wolves who've been kicked out of a territory and been wandering anywhere. They are called hounds. There are three of them. Then there were two more. My eyes snapped open. They were usually blue, b
