“I said!!! I don't want to.” Sterling crossed his arms against his chest, laughing before bending towards me. He held me by my chin and looked into my eyes making me feel really uncomfortable. “You seem afraid. You don’t have to be afraid of anything while with me,” he inched his face closer to mine so that I could feel his breath against my face. He held my palms and placed the document in them. “Read it.” I stared at the document before me. Hesitantly, I flipped open the documents ”LEGAL PROTECTION: FULL COVERAGE OF ALL CRIMINAL CHARGES AND LIABILITY UNDER THE STERLING LEGAL NETWORK” My eyes stopped on the line. “I didn’t kill anyone..” I argued but was cut short by Sterling. “Well, you attempted to. You placed lives in danger by burning down the venue and shooting and you are liable for endangering others,” he replied, shaking his head slightly like I was a joke. “Why are you doing this? What’s in it for you?” I questioned. Just then my phone rang, I picked it up immediatel

I woke in the morning, the maid guiding me to the dining room. As I got there, Sterling was already there. He wasn't eating, he was reading a file, a crystal glass of water beside him. He didn't look up when I entered."Sit," he commanded. I sat, my hands trembling beneath the table. He slid a single sheet of heavy, cream-colored stationery across the mahogany surface. "Read it," he said.My eyes scanned the lines. It wasn't just a demand to stay away from Harris; it was a total severance of his existence from mine. Clause one: Immediate cessation of all contact with H.R. Clause two: Mandatory presence at all social functions under the husband's direction. Clause three: Financial autonomy is contingent upon absolute discretion."This is ridiculous," I whispered, the heat of shame rising in my neck. "You can't own my thoughts, Sterling.""I don't need to own your thoughts," he leaned forward, his shadow swallowing me. "Vanessa," You can be the woman the world sees my loyal, elegant

As Harris left the room, I stood up from the tangled silk sheets, watching Sterling walk out after Harris stepped out. “What had just happened?”I pulled the sheet up to my chest, hugging myself tightly. I stared at the closed door, and back at the mirror in the room. Pushing my feet down the bed, the sound of footsteps approaching got closer and closer and suddenly the door opened. Sterling stood in the doorway, still in his suit, still composed in that infuriating, impenetrable way. He crossed the room and set a glass of water and a folded silk robe on the nightstand. "Drink," he said, his voice softer, almost like nothing had happened in the past minute. "You're dehydrated,” he added. “I don’t want it, how in the world would you even know I am dehydrated?” I said calmly and looking into his eyes slowly. “Didn’t you enjoy the moment with Harris?” He asked, with a smile on his face. It was almost like I was a tool for his amusement. With a sigh, I responded, “ I wa

The following morning, I woke up to the sound of birds chirping around. Just as I set my feet on the floor, the maid walked in. “Breakfast is ready ma,” she said, bowing slightly before me. “ Do you need anything?” I nodded my head, and she took a step back, leaving the room. Even though I did not want to leave the room, I had to because his family was here. Taking deep breaths, I washed my face and mouth with the mouthwash before heading out. Downstairs, Sterling and his family sat around the table. He didn't smile at me, instead, he just watched me closely making me feel very uncomfortable. After breakfast, everyone left the table except for Nick. He stood up and walked up to me, “Want to go for a ride?” He asked and I smiled softly at him. He held out his hand, and before I knew it, my hand was on his palm. We walked out to the yard. My eyes met the horses, i did not know there were horses in the house. He led me toward the nearest horse, a chestnut with a flowing

“Then don’t wish anymore,” I said, and he smiled. “Not yet, not now,” he whispered into my ear. Being in Nick’s arms was like being suspended in a perfect, warm bubble a bubble scented with his cologne filling up my nostrilsThe beat pulsed through the floor as I let my body move against Nick's, the brush of hip against hip, every time his hand found the small of my back and pulled me closer. "Yes, please," I whispered back, tilting my chin up so my lips were barely a breath away from his jaw. The heat radiating from his skin made my pulse hammer against my throat. He laughed softly against my temple, his mouth grazing my skin with the ghost of a kiss. "Patience," he murmured, his voice dropping to a velvet rumble that I felt everywhere. His palm slid down from my back and rested possessively on the curve of my hip, his thumb tracing slow circles through the thin fabric of my dress. Swaying together, our bodies locked in a rhythm that had nothing to do with the music. Arou
