71. You survived.

Ophelia povBy the time I reach the raised platform in the center and step on it, my hands are shaking so bad, dad would probably make a stupid joke about the earthquake if he was close enough. My eyes scan the crowd but focus only on my family. Everyone is here, watching me, waiting for the disaster to strike. “There won’t be a disaster,” a voice whispers in my head and my eyes widen, immediately looking for whoever might have said those words. “Not them, only me. I’m your wolf, you can name me tonight.”My breath catches as tears well up in my eyes but I refuse to let them fall. I have no idea how to speak to a wolf properly, but I try anyway, “can anyone else hear me? How am I getting a wolf? That’s a little backwards given that my mother isn’t a wolf and from what I gather, neither is my father.” There’s a moment of silence, long enough for me to start assuming that someone’s trying to prank me, which would be downright cruel since this is kind of an important moment for me. Ophelia pov“Okay, this is totally not good,” I whisper to my wolf, even though nobody but her can hear me, “four is a little too much, isn’t it? Hayes povThis can’t be happening. Fuck me, I already had a feeling that Ophelia was my mate. Scratch that, I knew, deep in my fucked-up soul, that she was the moment I first caught a whiff of her scent and realized I couldn’t get enough of it. But now, there are three more fuckers I have to compete with and one of them is my brother? How is that fair? Ophelia povI’m so confused, I don’t know what to think anymore. All of them start speaking over each other, the only person who remains silent, just holding my hand, is the serpent. Alister, Hayes and Tate are too busy screaming at each other to notice the growing panic in me. Whatever I expected of my coming of age ceremony, it wasn’t this. “Stop!” I suddenly scream and silence them all. My chest is heaving with heavy breaths and my face feels so hot, my skin might as well melt off. Ophelia povWithout waiting for another answer I don’t want to hear, I walk straight past the guests and head toward the table where the birthday cake is waiting for me. Some pieces are already missing - so much for waiting for the birthday girl to get her slice first. “You can’t exactly avoid this,” my wolf mutters, “the Goddess-”“If the Goddess wanted a speech from me, she should’ve sent less men my way,” I cut her off.
