Ophelia povThe words echo in the room around us so loud, mom freezes and my head snaps to the side, eyes seeking out the owner of the voice. There he is, standing in the doorframe, looking flushed and out of breath. My stomach drops and my heart beats a little faster at the same time, which seems impossible but still happens. I open my mouth to speak, but no words leave my lips while mom slaps both hands over her mouth, “Goddess,” she chokes out the word and it sounds strained behind her palms. Tears fill my eyes and blur my vision - I don’t know whether to cry or scream, or do anything at all. It’s too much, everything seems like too much. “How,” mom chokes out and pulls her hands from her mouth, looking equally as stunned as I feel. Before I can react, she pulls me into a tight, almost bone-crushing hug, lets out a strained sob and whispers in my ear, “you deserve this.
