The first thing people noticed about supernaturals was usually their eyes. Humans pretended not to stare, but everyone does. A vampire walked into a room, and suddenly everyone remembered how to sit up straight. A werewolf entered, and conversations became a little bit quieter. Not because they had to. Not because the law said humans should fear them. Because power has a way of making people always pay attention. I had spent three and a half years working at The Ivory Plate, which was a fancy enough place to attract wealthy customers and just affordable enough for ordinary people to pretend they belonged there. Which meant I had served my fair share of humans, vampires, and werewolves. I knew the difference. Vampires had red eyes. Not the kind of red you saw in generic horror movies. More like a deep, unnatural crimson that made you remember they weren't human. Werewolves had silver eyes. A beautiful, bright, impossible silver. I had learned not to stare. They were

- One month later -"You're seriously not going?"I didn't even look up from the tray I was carrying. "Nope."Maya followed beside me as I moved between tables."You didn't even think about it?""I thought about it.""And?""And my answer is still no."She sighed dramatically. "You're unbelievable."I placed a glass of water in front of a customer and turned back to her. "I'm not having this conversation while I'm working.""You're saying that like we haven't had this conversation three times already. This is the opportunity of a lifetime, one that's nearly impossible to get."I sighed, even though I knew she wasn't wrong. The Choosing had been all anyone talked about for weeks. Not just at the restaurant, but everywhere. It was a major event in the supernatural world.Carefully selected humans who wanted to become Moon Jewels or Blood Jewels could attend. Werewolves and vampires looking for companions could express interest. The human made the final choice."I don't belong there. I d

The hall had fallen into an uncomfortable silence as both werewolves and vampires awaited my decision. Vampires leaned forward, crimson eyes narrowed. Werewolves tapped their fingers against the armrests of their chairs impatiently. The announcer folded his hands behind his back, no longer having anything to say. He had done his job. He advertised me, exceptionally, and got three very important supernaturals to stand up for me. It was all in my hands now.But this choice... it was so big. Ten minutes on stage felt so little to decide. This was my future we were talking about. My happiness, freedom, and peace rested on this very moment.I looked toward Lord Valentin Sinclair. He hadn't moved. His eyes rested on mine with a practiced patience. Not once had he smiled or tried to persuade me further to choose him. He only waited, as if he had always been the clear choice.Having him as my Chosen might benefit me. He was calm, and he seemed fair enough. Though, I'd heard passing stories

The SUV slowed down after a twenty minutes."We're here," the driver said.I looked outside, noticing that the dining room light was on. My aunt was still up.Emmett opened the door and stepped out, holding it open for me. I moved to climb out, but hesitated. "The collar." I said, looking up at him. My fingers brushed the silver crescent. "Can I... take it off?"Both brothers looked at me."Not that I don't want anyone to know about this.. just... my aunt has an... opinion about Moon Jewels.""You didn't tell her about tonight." Emmett said, his brow lifting. "You do realize that the entire country will know about this first thing in the morning? We aren't exactly the most unknown werewolves.""By then," I bit my lower lip. "I'm hoping she'll already be in the hospital for surgery."Emmett looked at Rafe, seeming to be communicating with him silently. He looked back at me."You can't take it off," Emmett answered gently. "It can only be removed by one of us.""Oh.""I'd rather you di

I stood outside Rafe's bedroom for another second, staring at the closed door. "So much for making a good impression." I let out the breath I'd been holding and continued down the hallway. The penthouse was no longer quiet. Two voices drifted from the kitchen. One that belonged to Emmett, and another deep voice. "...Warren isn't willing to take no for an answer." The other voice said calmly. I slowed my pace down, listening unintentionally. "Then kill him," Emmett responded. I froze in my steps. The words had been spoken so casually that for a second, I wondered if I'd imagined them. "You want him dead?" "If he's becoming a problem, yes." There wasn't even a hint of hesitation. His tone had no anger to it. No rush... it was just a simple decision for him. My stomach tightened. Sometimes I forgot that werewolves were nothing like humans. They relied on their instincts more than logic, and killing was a big part of them. Most importantly, Rafe and Emmett were
