Matteo had the storage address by four. Celine, wrapped in a blanket in the small parlor with our mother's voice still on speaker beside her, had given us the last piece we needed without knowing it mattered — a stray mention, half-asleep, that Damian kept a folder of foundation paperwork in his own study, and that she had once seen him cross-reference it against something he called *the restoration years*, years before either of us had known to ask the question. It was not proof of anything. It was, Adrian said, watching me write it in the notebook at four in the morning, exactly the kind of loose thread a careful man forgets he has left hanging, because he has never once imagined the two women closest to him comparing notes. We reached the foundation office at six, before the sun had fully cleared the buildings across the street, in a car Adrian drove himself because he said a driver was one more person who would remember, later, that we had gone. The Vale Fami

I woke to an empty study and a note in Adrian's hand on the pillow beside me, which was, I understood before I had even finished reading it, its own kind of confession, because a man who left notes instead of waking the person beside him was a man who had already decided he did not want to have the conversation the note was standing in for.*Gone to look at what's in the box. Alone. I'll tell you everything once I understand what we're dealing with. This isn't the study — I'm not deciding what you can carry. I'm deciding what I can carry first, so I don't hand you something I haven't finished being wrecked by myself. Back by ten. — A.*I read it twice. The elms were still grey with early light through the window, the house holding the particular hush it kept before the staff arrived, and I sat for one moment longer than I meant to with the note pressed flat against my knee, feeling the old, familiar anger rise — not at Adrian specifically, not yet, bu

I asked him to meet me in the study at nine, and I did not tell him why, because I had learned, by now, exactly how much a man like Adrian Voss valued the particular vertigo of not knowing what was coming, and I wanted him to feel, for once, the specific discomfort I had lived inside since the night he gave me five rules by firelight and called it generosity.I had the fire built the same way. I had the chairs arranged the same way — his, angled so the light would catch him fully, mine, angled so it would not. When he came in and saw the room, I watched him understand, in the space of a single breath, exactly what I had done and exactly why, and something crossed his face that was not quite alarm and not quite delight, but stood very close to both."You've rearranged the geometry," he said."I've reversed it." I gestured to his chair — the one that had once been mine, angled toward the shadow. "Sit."He looked at the chair, and then at me, and

Matteo had walked Damian out through the front gate himself, and had come back an hour later to report, in his usual flat register, that the car had gone and had not circled back, and that he had already doubled the evening watch without being asked to. Adrian had thanked him with the particular weariness of a man who had spent his entire adult life managing consequences he had not chosen, and then he had come and found me in the small parlor, and had simply sat down beside me without a word, close enough that our shoulders touched, and let the sitting be the whole of what either of us said for several minutes.Neither of us mentioned Damian again that night, which was, I understood even as we let the silence hold, its own kind of decision — not avoidance, but the particular discipline of two people choosing which fires to feed and which to let burn down untended for a few hours, because a marriage, I was learning, required as much triage as any ledger, and not every fi

The annual shareholders' meeting had been scheduled long before any of us knew what the month would ask of us — a fixed date on a corporate calendar, immovable in the way such dates always are, arriving regardless of whether the family behind the letterhead happened to be mid-collapse. Adrian had explained it to me over breakfast, three days out, in the flat, careful tone he used for things he had already decided not to be anxious about, which I had learned, by then, was the surest sign that he was."The minority shareholders who moved against us in the spring will be there," he said. "So will the ratings agency's observer, unofficially, and at least two financial journalists who have spent a month deciding whether my marriage is a liability or a footnote. I would like you there. I would also understand entirely if you preferred not to be, given everything currently sitting in a box in my study.""I'll be there," I said, before he had finished the sentence.
