41: Interrupted

MicaNeither of us spoke for a long moment after he stopped himself, the unfinished word hanging between us like something physical, something I could almost reach out and touch if I tried."It's okay," I finally said, though it wasn't entirely true, some part of me aching with the particular frustration of standing at the edge of understanding without quite crossing over. "You don't have to say it before you're ready.""I want to." His voice was rough, unguarded in a way I rarely saw from him. "I want to say it, Mica. I just don't know how to make it mean what it needs to mean without also acknowledging everything it changes, everything it asks of both of us, and I'm terrified of getting that wrong.""Then don't say the word yet. Just—" I hesitated, some instinct pulling me forward despite every reasonable caution I should have been exercising. "Just let me understand what you're feeling, even without the word attached to it."He looked at me, something shifting in his expression, th

42: What the Scan Showed

MicaNeither of us slept much that night.I lay awake listening to the quiet of the house, one hand resting protectively over my stomach, cataloguing every small sensation with the particular hypervigilance fear brings, searching for some sign that everything was fine, or some confirmation that it wasn't.Nyric appeared at my door sometime past three in the morning, unable to sleep either, and rather than retreat to his own restless solitude, he simply sat in the chair beside my bed until dawn, neither of us speaking much, both of us grateful not to be facing the uncertainty alone. The drive to the clinic felt endless, morning traffic crawling past at a pace that made the anxiety in my chest tighten further with every passing minute."Whatever it is," Nyric said, reaching over to take my hand as we finally pulled into the clinic parking lot, "we face it together. However difficult, however frightening. Together.""Together," I repeated, needing to hear myself say it, needing the word

43: "What were you praying for?"

NyricI finally let go of her hand somewhere near the estate gates, only because navigating the final turn required both hands on the wheel, and even then, the moment I'd parked, I reached for it again almost immediately, some instinct refusing to fully release the contact."You're going to need both hands eventually," Mica said, amusement threading through her voice despite the exhausting morning we'd just survived."Eventually. Not yet."She let me hold on a while longer, and I was grateful, more grateful than I could easily explain, for her patience with whatever this particular need actually was. That evening, once she'd retreated upstairs for an early rest, exhausted from the emotional weight of the day, I found myself alone in the study, the echoes of the appointment still sitting heavy in my chest.Ethan found me there sometime after dinner, a bottle of whiskey between us that neither of us had touched yet."How is she?" he asked, settling into the familiar chair across from my

44: Fragile Peace

MicaThe weeks after the scare passed more gently than I expected, settling into a rhythm that felt, for the first time since Ophelia's death, almost peaceful.Nyric had grown quieter in a way I couldn't quite name — not distant, exactly, but thoughtful, like he was turning something over privately that he wasn't ready to share yet. I didn't push. I'd learned, months ago now, that some things needed their own time to surface.By the time the third trimester arrived, my body had changed enough that I could no longer pretend any of this was still theoretical. My stomach had grown round and undeniable, the baby's movements no longer faint flutters but full, insistent kicks that sometimes woke me in the middle of the night."He's active tonight," I said one evening, wincing as a particularly strong kick landed just beneath my ribs."He?" Nyric raised an eyebrow from across the sitting room, setting down the book he'd been only half reading. "Dr. Reyes confirmed that?""No. I just have a f

45: Coming Home

MicaNyric posted extra guards at the gates that night, and though he tried to keep his concern from showing too plainly in front of me, I recognized the particular tightness in his jaw that meant he was taking the unfamiliar car far more seriously than his careful reassurances suggested."It's probably nothing," he said, settling into bed beside me hours later than usual, his own restlessness obvious despite the words. "A reporter, most likely. Or someone lost.""You don't believe that.""I believe in being cautious regardless of what I believe." He pulled me gently against him, one hand resting protectively over my stomach the way it often did now. "Try to sleep. The guards will radio if anything changes."I didn't sleep well, drifting in and out of shallow, anxious dreams, and when I finally woke to gray morning light, I found Nyric already gone from the bed, his side cold enough to suggest he'd been up for some time.I found him in the entryway, still in yesterday's clothes, Ethan

46: Stay Away From Him

NyricI spent the better part of the morning in the security office with Ethan, reviewing camera footage from the previous night, coordinating with the perimeter team, forcing myself to focus on logistics rather than the particular cold fury building steadily beneath my composure."The car's registered to a shell company," Ethan said, scrolling through information one of his contacts had managed to pull overnight. "Untraceable on the surface, though I'd wager everything I own that it traces back to him eventually if we dig deep enough.""He was always careful about covering his movements," I said, remembering old habits from years ago, patterns I'd hoped time might have softened rather than sharpened. "Even as a teenager, he understood how to disappear when he wanted to.""You think he's already in the territory? Not just passing through?""I think a man doesn't circle an estate for two nights running unless he's already decided to stay long enough to finish whatever he came here to d
