The first gunshot was followed by another before I could even process the first one. My phone slipped out of my hand and hit the floor. I stared at it for half a second before another shot cracked through the building, and that was enough to get me moving. I ducked behind my desk and crouched there, one hand pressed against my mouth while another shot cracked somewhere below my floor. Someone screamed, followed by a man shouting something I couldn’t make out. Another voice answered him, and then running feet sounded somewhere below me. I reached for my phone and nearly dropped it again when my fingers wouldn’t cooperate. I finally managed to unlock it and hit 911 before lifting it to my ear, keeping myself low. “911. What’s your emergency?” “I’m in my office,” I whispered. “Someone is shooting downstairs.” “What’s the address?” I gave it to her, then listened as she started asking questions I couldn’t answer. How many people? What did they look like? Was anyone injured?
