~Vincent~“N-no, please, Father. I don't want to marry. Don't send me away, please... I'll be good. I promise.”Breakfast had somehow been going well, better than most days, actually. Until now. Well... maybe this was the fifth or sixth worst breakfast I'd ever had. I sat frozen in my chair, staring at my father across the long dining table. Vangand Danio didn't look particularly bothered by my begging. He calmly cut into his breakfast as though he hadn't just told me I was being given away.“You're marrying into the Volkov family,” he said.My stomach twisted. “The Volkovs? Father, you can't be serious. You've heard the rumors about them. You know what people say. You can't just send me there.”My hands trembled at the thought of being given to the devil himself. The Volkovs had a reputation that followed them everywhere. People said their leader was a psychopath who killed mostly for fun. There were stories about people who had crossed them and simply vanished, their families too t

~Vincent~The door creaked. I clutched the sink, my heart beating frantically.Did they find me?The door opened wider, and a familiar face appeared.Hugh.I nearly sagged with relief.“Hey, what's up? I thought I told you to stay put, not run around the hallway like you just came out of a horror film.” He chuckled.“I…”Maybe I shouldn't tell him. If that dangerous man was still looking for me, I'd only put Hugh in trouble.“Hehe… I was drunk, so I wanted to, uh… exercise.”Hugh raised an eyebrow.“You've been my best friend for years, Vince. You really think I'm going to believe that?”“I swear. You know I can't go back home drunk.”“Yeah, yeah. But that aside, Vince, let's talk about your wedding. You said you had something to tell me.”Phew.At least I'd gotten past that.“Don't think it's because I don't trust you or anything.” I fiddled with my nails, my head hanging low.Hugh's expression softened.“Then just tell me.”I swallowed.“You know I've been looking into my mother's d

~Vincent~My fingers tightened around the brass chain.“The boy you killed?”Luciano didn't answer. He simply looked at me for a moment before turning toward the door.“Your room is in the east wing. The butler should be here any minute to lead you there.”I stared at him. That was it?“You're not going to explain what you meant?”He ignored the question.“Come down for dinner by seven.”My brows pulled together.“You're just going to walk away?”He stopped at the base of the stairs that led somewhere in this ridiculously big house and glanced back at me.“Yes.”I opened my mouth, then closed it.Unbelievable. I wanted nothing more than to strangle the bastard.Luciano glanced at me again just before disappearing.“Seven, Vincent.”Then he walked out.I stood there staring at nothing in particular. What the hell was that supposed to mean? The brass chain felt heavier around my wrist. The boy he'd killed seven years ago. What did that have to do with me?Arghh. I'd come here to invest

~Vincent~ I woke up to the sound of laughter. For a moment, I lay still, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling, my mind still foggy from sleep. I had been dreaming again. The same kind of dream that had been haunting me for years. Darkness, Hands grabbing me and voices I could never forget. The feeling of being trapped with nowhere to run. I swallowed hard. “I thought changing my environment would at least ease the nightmares.” Apparently not. I groaned and pulled the blanket over my face. The laughter came again. Loud and Bubbling. Completely out of place in this gloomy mansion. Curiosity finally won. Who was making this graveyard of a mansion sound so cheerful? I got out of bed, quickly changed, and stepped out of my room. When I reached the bottom of the staircase, I stopped. The first thing I saw was the back of a woman with long golden hair. She was pointing a finger directly in Luciano's face as though she were scolding a child. Well, this was unexpected. The woman h

~Luciano~“Do you intend to keep staring at yourself, or are you actually going to get dressed?”Hugh's voice came from behind me.I adjusted the cuff of my shirt and glanced at him through the mirror. “I'm dressed.”“You've been standing there for ten minutes.”“And?”He sighed, dropping onto the couch. “The soirée starts in an hour. You know you're supposed to arrive before the guests, right?”“I know.”“Then why are you still here?”I fastened my watch. “I'm waiting for Vincent.”Hugh raised an eyebrow. “Vincent is coming?”“Yes.”“Why?”“Because he's my husband.”“That doesn't answer my question.”I turned toward him. “I want everyone to see him.”Hugh stared at me. “And why exactly?”“Because people behave differently when they know who stands beside me.”He rubbed his face. “You really need to work on the way you phrase things.”I chuckled. “Perhaps.”Before he could say anything else, the door opened.Vincent stepped inside. My eyes settled on him.The clothes I'd chosen suited
