"What do you mean by empty?" Mira's voice cracked in the dark."I mean exactly what I said." Adrian’s voice came from somewhere in the darkness to her left. She turned, but she couldn’t see him. Then came the sharp sound of a match striking. Which brought a weak flame suddenly to life, revealing Adrian’s face. He looked pale, and his eyes were fixed on something behind her.“There’s a headstone,” he whispered. “...and a coffin.”For a moment, neither of them moved. Adrian’s voice dropped even lower. “But there’s nothing inside.”"Your father faked his death?" Marcus asked, pulling himself up off the floor, still pressing a hand to the cut on his forehead."I don't know," Adrian said. "I found it empty two years after the funeral. I never told anyone because I didn't know what it meant, and honestly, I was scared to find out.""So what's in that photograph?" Mira asked.Adrian held it up to the torchlight. It showed an old man, standing in front of a warehouse Mira didn't recognize. Hi

Mira was so scared, as she could not move; her whole body was in a standstill."That's not possible," Lena whispered. "This room isn't on any blueprint, and nobody outside the family even knows this room exists.""Well, somebody knows," Mira whispered back, "because somebody's standing outside it."They heard a voice again through the steel; the voice sounded unhurried. "I can hear you two whispering, you know that, right? These walls are not soundproof," the voice added.Lena held Mira's arm in the dark, gripping hard. "Don't answer him." She said,"I wasn't planning to," Mira breathed."Suit yourselves," the voice said. "I'll just wait then; moreover, I've got nowhere else to be tonight."Something metal scraped against the panel again, slow, like a man dragging a knife along a wall just to hear the sound of it."Who is that?" Mira mouthed at Lena.Lena shook her head, but her face had gone pale in the thin orange light. "I don't know his voice; that's what scares me. Come to think

Elena's eyes stayed locked on the spot where Mira hid.Mira's whole body froze. "Don't move," she told her. "Don't even breathe."But Elena didn't shout. She looked down at the floor, like she had seen nothing at all."She knows we're here," Mira whispered to Marcus."Her looks do not say so," Marcus whispered back. "Smart girl."Lena crouched lower beside them, peeking out just enough to see. "That's Adrian's father, alright. He is older than the last time I saw him, but it's him.""Are you sure?" Mira asked."I dated his son for two years," Lena said. "I would know that face anywhere."Up ahead, Corin was talking and walking slowly in a circle around Adrian like he was enjoying every second of it."You know what I want, Adrian," Corin said. "I've wanted it since before you were born. Since your grandfather decided my family didn't deserve a fair split of something we built together.""So take it," Adrian said. "Take the land, take the money, take whatever paper you need signed. Just

Everyone stared at the radio table."That's not our line. We don't even use that frequency," Marcus said as he moved closer."Then don't answer it. It could be a trick," Elena said, pushing herself up on the cot even though her legs were weak."It could also be Lena. She probably found a way to use a radio," Adrian said as he walked across the room."Or it could be Corin. Maybe he wants to gloat again," Mira said. Adrian's hand hovered over the receiver, and for a moment, no one spoke. Then he picked it up and asked, "Who is this?"At first, there was only silence, then heavy breathing."Adrian, it's me." They heard a woman's voice, weak and afraid."Lena? Where are you? Are you hurt?" Adrian asked, his voice full of worry."I don't have much time. He let me call you once. He wants you to hear this yourself." Lena's voice shook with fear."Hear what?" Adrian demanded. There was silence, then Corin's voice cut in, taking over the line completely."Good evening, Adrian. I hope you had a

"Say that again," Adrian said as he quickly took the radio from Marcus's belt. "You said there are other people and they're not Corin's men?""I'm serious," Marcus replied, breathing heavily. Adrian could hear fighting in the background. "These men aren't wearing the same clothes as Corin's men. They don't even have the scent of our pack either. I don't know who sent them.""Get Samuel out of there," Adrian ordered. "Now.""I'm trying," Marcus said. A loud grunt, then a heavy thud, came over the radio. "There are at least four of them. I need help."Adrian was already putting on his jacket. "I'm coming.""You can't leave," Robert said. He struggled to stand even though he was still weak. "What about Corin's deadline? Mira? The chapel? Everything we're supposed to do?""Marcus is in danger right now," Adrian replied. "I'm not going to leave him there to die just because we have a deadline.""I'm coming with you," Mira said."No," Adrian said as he quickly walked toward the door."Adria
