Chapter 11: The Weight of Old Stone

Morning light reached the eastern wing earlier than Selena expected. She had slept in broken stretches, waking often to the unfamiliar silence of thick stone walls and the distant rush of the river below the palace. Each time she opened her eyes the same thoughts returned: the glowing mark on her wrist, Kael's quiet confirmation of a bloodline that should have been extinct, and the knowledge that an entire council of Lycan elders would soon look at her and demand explanations she did not possess.By the time the sky beyond the windows had turned a clear, hard blue, she was already dressed. She chose another of the simple gowns from the wardrobe, deep green this time, with long sleeves that covered the birthmark completely, and braided her hair back in a single practical plait. The mirror above the washbasin showed her the same face she had always worn: soft features, wide hazel eyes that still carried too much of the previous weeks' strain, a mouth that had learned to stay quiet under

Chapter 12: What the Records Remember

The summons from Elder Miren came in the late afternoon.A young page delivered the message with a polite bow and no unnecessary words: the elder requested Selena's presence in the archive wing before the evening meal. Selena stood alone in her rooms for several minutes after the page left, staring at the place on her wrist where the mark lay quiet beneath her sleeve. The council had been one kind of trial, public, political, buffered by Kael's authority. This would be another. Older. More personal. She found the archive wing with the help of a silent guard who led her through a series of descending corridors that grew cooler and quieter with every turn. The air smelled of dust, old parchment, and stone that had not seen direct sunlight in centuries. At the end of a final narrow passage, a heavy door stood open.Elder Miren waited inside. The chamber was circular, its walls lined with shelves that rose into shadow. Scrolls and bound volumes filled every available space. A single long

Chapter 13: The Quiet Between Storms

Selena woke before the sun cleared the eastern peaks. For a moment the heavy silence of the palace room felt almost gentle. Then the weight of the previous day's revelations settled over her again, Elder Miren's steady voice in the archive, the yellowed records, the name of a queen who had been betrayed and nearly erased, and the three trials that waited like stones across a path she had never chosen to walk.Compassion. Courage. Sacrifice. She sat up slowly, pushing the thick fur coverlet aside. The mark on her wrist remained quiet beneath the sleeve of her nightdress. No glow. No warning heat. Only the ordinary pale skin and the faint lines she had carried since childhood. Yet the knowledge that it could wake again changed the way the air itself seemed to rest against her.A soft knock came at the door."Enter," she called.A young steward stepped inside carrying a tray. Warm bread, soft cheese, sliced fruit, and a pot of the same dark, bitter tea she had been given since arriving.

Chapter 14: The First Lesson

The quiet did not last the full day.Selena had returned to her rooms from the eastern gardens and spent the remaining morning hours in restless stillness, pacing the length of the chamber, standing at the window, sitting only to rise again moments later. The faint pulse she had felt near the standing stones lingered in her memory like the afterimage of bright light. Not painful. Not urgent. Simply present, as though something long asleep had rolled over and taken notice of her in return. She was still standing at the window when the knock came. This time it was Elder Miren, accompanied by a silent page who carried a narrow wooden case. The elder's expression was more intent than it had been in the archive."I require an hour of your time," Miren said without preamble. "The sealed vaults yielded more than I expected. Some of it concerns the practical matter of the mark. The rest concerns you directly."Selena stepped aside to let them enter. The page set the case on the table, bowed,

Chapter 15: What the Moon Remembers

The focusing stone became part of the quiet rhythm of Selena's days. Each morning after she dressed, she sat by the window of her chamber, the smooth disc resting in her open palm, and followed the breathing pattern Elder Miren had taught her. The warmth came more readily now, no longer a surprise, but a steady answering presence that rose from the mark on her wrist and met the stone like two currents finding the same channel. With the warmth came the sense of attention, clearer each time, as though something vast and patient had turned a fraction more of its regard in her direction. She never forced it. Miren had been clear on that point. The connection was to be noticed, not seized. On the third morning the impression returned. It arrived between one breath and the next: the silver wash of moonlight over ancient standing stones, the low sound of a woman's voice speaking words Selena still could not understand, and the brief, startling certainty that the voice knew her. Not as the so

Chapter 16: The Shape of Answer

The impressions grew clearer with each morning's practice.Selena no longer startled when the warmth rose from the focusing stone into the mark on her wrist. She had learned to meet it the way Miren had instructed, open, unforced, breathing through the quiet pull of attention until the connection settled into something almost conversational. The flashes that came with it remained fragmentary: moonlight on ancient stone, the low cadence of a woman's voice, the brief certainty of being known. Yet each time the fragments lasted a little longer, and each time the sense of recognition felt less like an intrusion and more like a door standing slightly ajar.On the fifth morning the door opened wider. She was seated by the window in the slate-blue gown, stone resting in her palm, when the ordinary warmth deepened into a slow, silver heat that spread up her arm and across her chest. The rejection wound flared once in protest, then subsided as though something older and steadier had placed a h

Chapter 17: The Door That Stays Open

The words followed her through the rest of the day and into the night. You are not the wound they made of you.Selena carried them the way she once carried the focusing stone, quietly, carefully, testing their weight against the older, heavier truths she had lived with for years. In the eastern gardens they felt almost possible. In the silence of her rooms, when the rejection ache pulsed beneath her sternum and memory supplied Ryker's voice with perfect cruelty, they felt like a kindness she had not yet earned. She slept poorly.Near dawn the connection opened without the stone. It began as the familiar warmth along her wrist, then deepened into the same silver heat she had felt the morning before. This time the impression did not remain fragmentary. It unfolded with deliberate clarity:The woman, the First Moon Queen, stood once more within the circle of stones. The full moon above her was impossibly large, its light thick enough to cast sharp shadows. The Queen's soft, powerful body

Chapter 18: The Measure of Openness

The days that followed settled into a new kind of tension, quieter than the flight through the Forbidden Forest, sharper than the first uncertain nights in the palace.Selena continued the morning practice without the focusing stone more often than with it. The mark answered more readily now, warming at the simple turn of her attention, as though the vision of the First Moon Queen had permanently thinned whatever barrier had once stood between them. The silver heat no longer startled her. It felt, increasingly, like a second pulse she was learning to live alongside the older ache of the severed bond. She did not seek further visions. The Queen's words had been clear enough. You are closer than you know. The work was not to chase confirmation. The work was to keep the door open.On the third morning after the vision, Kael found her in the eastern gardens before the sun had fully cleared the peaks. She stood inside the small circle of standing stones, bare wrist turned to the pale light

Chapter 19: Silver in the Open

Selena did not speak of the silver light that night. She returned to her rooms, ate the meal that had been left for her, and sat for a long time by the window with her sleeve pushed back, watching the ordinary skin of her wrist as though it might bloom into radiance again without warning. The mark remained quiet. The warmth beneath it had settled into a low, constant presence, no longer an event, simply part of the way her body occupied space.Sleep came more easily than it had in weeks. When she woke to clear morning light, the first clear thought in her mind was the Queen's voice, steady and without pity:You are not the wound they made of you.She rose, washed, and dressed in the slate-blue gown. The focusing stone stayed in its case. She no longer needed it to find the connection. A few deliberate breaths were enough to feel the mark answer with soft heat and the now-familiar sense of attention turning toward her.Kael arrived earlier than the usual hour. One look at her face told

Chapter 20: The Light That Cannot Be Hidden

The formal recognition came without ceremony or warning.Selena had spent the morning in the eastern gardens, as had become her habit, standing inside the small circle of stones with her marked wrist turned to the open sky. The air was clear and cold. A few Lycans moved along the distant paths, gardeners, a pair of off-duty warriors, an older female reading on a stone bench, but none paid her particular attention. The guard remained at a respectful distance. She was not seeking the light. She was simply remaining open. The warmth began the way it always did now, soft, steady, rising from the mark like a second pulse. Then, without the gradual build of previous days, the silver radiance flared into full visibility. It was no longer a faint shimmer confined to the skin of her wrist. Soft moonlight bloomed around her hand and forearm, clear and undeniable even under the bright mountain sun. The light held for several long breaths, strong enough that the nearest gardener stopped mid-step
