**Oliver**I wasn't checking her reports every day.I checked them every other day. Occasionally every day. That was different.Leon put them on my desk without comment, which meant he was absolutely filing this information away to comment on later when he felt the timing was right. He had a gift for that.Day seven and Colette Etienne had already replaced the hotel signage, retrained the front desk staff on guest response protocols, initiated contact with four local corporate offices about partnership rates, and apparently convinced the chef to overhaul the menu. She'd also personally resolved three guest complaints that the previous manager had let sit.I set the report down. She was moving fast. Too fast, maybe. Doing too much at once without a clear priority system could fracture things rather than fix them. That's what I told myself, anyway."The Harborview's social media posted something," Leon said from the doorway. "First post in over a year. It has engagement.""What kind of

**Colette**Week three and the numbers were starting to move. Not dramatically. Not in a way that would make anyone stand up and applaud. But the occupancy rate had climbed four points and the restaurant was averaging eleven tables at lunch service instead of four. The corporate outreach had produced two responses, one of which looked genuinely promising. A mid-sized logistics company looking to house visiting staff regularly. Forty to sixty room nights a month if we could agree on a rate.I'd sent the proposal back within twenty-four hours of their inquiry.Priya knocked on my office door mid-afternoon. She'd become something of an unofficial liaison between the front desk and my office, partly because she was quick and observant and partly because she seemed to have decided I was worth investing effort in. I appreciated both."There's someone here to see you," she said. "He doesn't have an appointment. He said to tell you he's from Ashford Industries corporate office."I looked up.

**Colette**The suite looked like a small storm had moved through it.A lamp was on its side on the carpet. The throw pillows from the sofa were scattered across the room in a pattern that suggested they'd been thrown with considerable force rather than just knocked. A ceramic fruit bowl that had probably cost more than my first month's rent was in three pieces near the bathroom door. The curtains were half pulled from their rod on one side, hanging at an angle like a tired shoulder.Elijah stood in the middle of it looking at me looking at it."I was angry," he said. Explaining but not apologizing. I respected that."I can tell," I said. "Do you want to pick some of it up while we wait or leave it for later?"He considered this seriously. "Later.""Okay."I moved a pillow from the sofa and sat down on it. Not in an armchair. Not at the table. On the floor, back against the sofa, leaving space beside me. Elijah hovered for a moment, then came and sat close enough that I could hear him

**Lea**Mommy thought I was asleep.I wasn't asleep. I was doing the thing I did sometimes where I lay very still and breathed slow and she would check on me and then go back to the kitchen table where she thought I couldn't hear her thinking. She didn't make noise when she was thinking but I could always tell. The chair would creak when she shifted. Her tea would get cold because she forgot to drink it.Tonight she was thinking harder than usual.I kept my eyes closed and listened to the city outside the window. Crestfall City sounded different from our old town. More cars. More people. Sometimes music from somewhere that I couldn't find no matter how much I looked out the window. Our old town had waves. I missed the waves sometimes but I didn't tell Mommy because she'd already worried enough about moving.I was thinking about the boy.Cora had told me today at daycare about her brother's friend who went to a different school and was apparently very serious and didn't talk much. Cora

**Colette**Week six arrived with a problem I hadn't planned for.A review. Online, posted at eleven on a Tuesday night by a guest who'd stayed three weeks ago. Four paragraphs of detailed, articulate frustration about a noise complaint that had been mishandled. Specific names mentioned. Specific failures itemized. And at the bottom, a line that would stick in search results: *This hotel is improving in some ways but clearly still has serious management issues.*I read it at six in the morning over coffee before Lea woke up.Then I read it again. The complaint itself was legitimate. I'd already identified the mishandling when I went through the complaint logs in week two. The noise issue had been real, the response had been slow, and the follow-up had never happened. It predated my arrival by a week but the review had only just gone up and the internet didn't care about timelines. What I cared about was that someone had a genuinely bad experience and left feeling unheard. That was fix
